I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
I made my suspension set up with a lot of forgiveness so I look like an expert still when I get it wrong ;-)

I am also very new to hammock hanging, so far practicing only in city parks in Southern California, so my tree selection has been limited. And of course my experience judging tree spacing is pretty limited too. My first hang was about a 20' spread and my second was maybe 11'. For my next attempt I took a length of paracord, put a bowline in one end and knotted it every two feet from there. While I agree you don't need a tape measure, this knotted line helped me with both tree separation and setting the initial height and length of my webbing straps. A 14' spread works much better for me.
+1 gunner76: Experience is how we avoid mistakes, but making mistakes is how we gain experience.
The slings that I made allow me to err on the wide side of fit, which is convenient; I can theoretically handle a 30-foot span if necessary, with a minimum of 12 feet or so. I haven't needed to get near full extension yet.
I went out and snagged two Pairs of descending rings, now all I need are straps, I saw climbing webbing at rei 30ft for around $13.50, which i asssume, i can just split in half. I'm not sure if thats what i want or not though.
