    Hammock set up order of operations?

    Hi all,

    When I was in school I was taught BOMDAS as the mathematical order of operations. Try as I might, the new version BODMAS has never stuck with me.

    What is your order of operations when hanging your hammock where...

    T = Tarp
    S (l/r)= Suspension (left/right)
    H = Hammock
    Q = Quilt
    B = Bugnet

    Of course in the rain the T would be the first up. Do people usually set up one side of their suspension first, then hammock, then far suspension? Or both suspension points and then attach the hammock? Just curious how different people set up their complete system.

    For me it would be...

    Interested in hearing how others approach their set-up.

    First I attach my hammock suspension to the trees.

    Then I attach the hammock to the suspension and test it.

    Next, I usually attach my underquilt.

    What follows is the tarp suspension and tarp. The tarp is usually contained within the skin, but if it looks like rain I'll actually guy it out, at least on one side.

    A water bottle in the ridgeline organizer and my pillow inflated. My top quilt gets stashed inside of my underquilt until I need it.

    When I take along the bridge the suspension and bugnet are integrated so it's kind of hard to break things down. Also, I typically use a pad instead of an underquilt but sometimes use a topquilt (but often just wrap up in a poncho liner).

    Long story short.....The tarp goes up first so I have a dry spot out of the weather in case things go south. At some point before bedtime I set up the rest of my shelter.

    Mine would be basically in the same order as yours, except when I hang suspension it's h/f as in head foot, and that may be different from left/right depending on the trees. My wife and I typically hang double so the larger tree is the head tree and the straps go up there first.

    Depends. Not wet and no chance of rain within an hour, then S (tree straps around tree), H (built in netting, UCR's are attached to the hammock), then toss in the TQ and deploy the UQ. Then, at least stretch the tarp above it all and lay out the stakes, in case it rains.

    If it is wet or potentially wet, T first. Then, same as above.

    Last trip (first part of June 2016), only on the last night did I pull the tarp out of the skins....just to mess around. Slept with the heavens above me every night (in the WBBB XLC with bug net).

    My order of operations would be:
    Suspension (head and foot ends)
    Hammock
    Bugnet
    Tarp
    Insulation

    No real reason behind this method. Probably just something that has carried over from my days with the tents.

    My suspensions, hammock, underquilt, topquilt, and integrated bugnet all pull out of my compression sack as I hang one side, as one single component. Then the spreader bars, then fine tune the hang. It's fast, like using the Lazy Slug Tube.

    And I usually hang my tarp up first, but leave it wrapped in snakeskins until after the hammock has been hung and adjusted.

    Straps first, unless raining. My setup is eerily similar to yours, but I use a winter sock as my tube. UQ, TQ, Hammock and Ridgeline are all enclosed and stuffed in main compartment of my bag. Both straps, attach head, attach foot, deploy tarp and stakes, porch mode if possible. Takes all of six minutes whilst whistling.
