    Summer Camping

So I guess this is the right place to post this. My last post got deleted with no explanation so hopefully this one won't. What do you guys and gals do in the summer to stay cool when hammocking? I recently went on a trip where I was sweating in my hammock w/o any insulation and wearing nothing but running shorts. It was miserable. I think the temp was 88 with a high humidity that night. What do you do?

Hot is hot, but I'll bet you would have been hotter in a tent. If the overnight low is 75* F or higher, I'm probably not going camping anyway.

I agree with SS. I just don't go if it is too hot and especially if too humid.

I do have two small battery operated fans I can hang from my ridgeline. You can also use one of those cold towels that activate with water. Put it on your forehead.

Absolutely hate camping in the heat and agree with SS, no way. Would rather fight the cold than the heat any day.

I bought a fan a while back to combat the heat. I may have to drag it along on the "no underquilt hang" next month if the temps are what I'm expecting. I realized today that sleeping in a damp hammock isn't bad. I've got a stand set up on my porch and a cheapo tablecloth hammock there for lounging. I hopped right out of the pool and into the hammock. It was a little uncomfortable at first but quickly started to feel pretty nice once I got used to the fabric temperature against the skin. I'm not sure how comfortable this would be to possibly wet down the hammock body a bit before you crawl into the sack. Maybe covering up with a super thin microfiber towel soaked would drop the temps a bit with some evaporative cooling. Maybe sleep in a damp t-shirt and shorts? I'm going to have to do some experimenting between now and mid-July.

Another vote for stay home. Summer and hiking, Blech. I don't understand why some people only camp in the summer. For me, that's the only season not to camp. Summers for kayaks and swimming pools.

Stay home, scour hammock forums for stories from the north, or work overtime to help pay for new gear.

My scouts will soak their ENO hammocks in water at summer camp, wring them out, twirl them around in the air, hang 'em up, then get in them to sleep. I tried this once and it does work. You will be cooler, sometimes too cool! It is a weird feeling at first, I must admit.

    The elusive overtime. Someday....someday

Thank you all for the inputs! I may have to get one of those ridge line fans (thank you for the link @zukiguy). I agree with you all that summer is for doing other things other than camping; however, my camping partner (*cough*mywife*cough*) is insisting we go out to play with the new gear. Can't say I blame her. LoL! I may look into one of those cooling towels as well. I don't think I'd go to bed wearing a wet shirt or soaking down the hammock and be comfortable. But, I'm willing to give it a try. The best way I can think of to do that is mid day naps and I like me some nap time!
