Going on my first Hammock trip this weekend - feeling apprehensive.

Not like I'm new to backpacking, been doing it since the late 60's, but this is my first hammock trip. In the last 5 days I received by BB XLC, a superfly tarp and a Wilderness Logics Underquilt. I have put it all together and I seem to be able to put it up ok. I am going with other hammock people. But for some reason, maybe that I am just putting different stuff in my pack, things just don't seem right. Leaving Friday morning for the Roan Highlands and coming back Monday night, it is now Tuesday and I have already check all my new gear out about three times to make sure it is all there. Any words of wisdom/advise from the old sages out there.

A couple of suggestions: don't use a stuffsack for your underquilt, just stuff it into a waterproof liner/trash bag with the rest of your clothes and other things that need to be waterproofed.

Pack your tarp in an outside pocket, or strap it to the outside of your pack for easy access.

What are you using for top insulation?

Top insulation will be one on my many goose down bags opened up as a quilt, that is the way I have been using them lately in a tent. Once I decide how I want to go in top quilts, I will probably begin to accumulate them like I did bags.

That'll work. Hope your trip goes well.

Have you actually slept in it yet? If not, that might be a source of apprehension.

No, unfortunately I have not had a chance to sleep in it yet, too busy with work and taking care of horses. Have set it up and laid in it and seemed to get comfortable in it. That could be part of the problem, planning on spending 3 nights in it without actually having slept in it.

Unfortunate that you have not practiced beforehand. And you're apprehensive too? That is a bad combination.

The good thing is that you have some decent gear and are going with fellow hammockers who hopefully know what they're doing.

Bring a book, relax at night rather than trying to fall asleep. Sometimes I think folks focus too much on falling asleep and then don't.

You've got good gear and support from friends....go and have fun. What's the worst thing that could happen? Lack of sleep? You'll do great!

Be sure to report back....I'm sure we will read all about what a great adventure you had!

Relaxificate yo'self.... hanging is THE way to go.
Once you are in your rig for the first night and are dozing off, you'll wonder why you didn't find your way back up into the trees sooner.
    G'luck...
