Hammock camping without woods or trees

I just wanna get some insight from you guys about hanging without woods. I just went on a trip to Utah to Bryce canyon and Zion and there was no place to set up my hammock. Luckily my uncle had a big enough tent to support both of us, so I just crashed with him. I don't know what I would have done without his tent. So what I'm asking is what you guys do to hang in places like this?

If I was hiking I would take a tent and enjoy it as much as I possibly could. If I was car camping I would take my Tato stand and hang as I normally do.

Do a search for Turtle Stand there are many variations to the same thing that can be made out of 2x2's and hinges and many claim it works just fine.

is this the only solution to this problem? I don't want to rely on car camping and a stand to enjoy my hammock. I also don't want to have both a set for tent camping and hammock.

I always make sure to backpack in an area where I know trees will be. Do some good Google Earth research before going.
Though I have not used one, some folks use these....http://www.handyhammock.co.uk/page/w...-hammock-stand
    and http://theultimatehang.com/2012/12/h...-stand-review/

Some use rock climbing gear such as cams as well.

If I knew there was a chance of going to the ground I would carry with me an air mattress.

I hike the desert SW quite a bit. In certain wilderness areas around here hammocks simply aren't practical like they are in other places. So I have a pad and bivy and sleep very contentedly on the ground. That said, I try to plan my trips around known places with trees (usually found near perennial water sources) or other suitable anchor points (posts, structures, whatever). Using strap/buckle suspension aids in flexibility of suspension points at a cost of a couple extra ounces over whoopies. That said, I NEVER bring both as I mostly backpack and want to keep weight down. For that same reason, hammock stands &etc aren't applicable.

I've been hammock camping for six years and have yet to go somewhere without trees. It doesn't take much planning on the East Coast to find trees. However, I've lived in Arizona and know that trees can be hard to find. If I knew I was going to a place without trees I'd carry a tent.

Sometimes the hammock kit just needs to stay home.

and sometimes you can figure something out.
