Question Can a topquilt be too long?

    Hello,

I am buying a topquilt for myself and a second for another person.

looking at the JRB Sierra Sniveler for camping out in temps from 60 to 20 degrees F.

    I am 5ft 10in
    she is 6ft

Should she get the long size? Should I?

jrb sniveler normal length is 78 inches.

"""For individuals over 5 feet 10 inches tall we offer a long version (86″ in length)."""" -JRB

I am thinking that she should get the long but I am on the fence.

    Thanks for any insight....

It's personal preference but I like a long quilt so on the really cold nights I can put in over my head so for me the longer the better as long as you aren't a gram counter.

I'm 6'2" and have a locolibre regular length TQ. If for any reason I need to go to ground, it's just a little short. It comes to my shoulders but that's about it. In my hammock I can get it up around my nose. From here on out I will be ordering or making all my quilts in the longer versions.

I prefer one that isn't too long for my height. All that insulation has to be heated up and if you don't have a lot of space but a small body or takes longer. This is why I go to bed with a hot water bottle in the cold Temps.

And For those of you pulling the TQ over your faces, be aware that this is life threatening in the cold weather. The condensation from you breathe will saturate the down and make it useless.

I'm 6'1" and have a long TQ. It's ok on the ground but almost annoying in a hammock. I'm thinking of sending it back to EE to have it shortened...

I made one that was about 4" too long and it was incredibly annoying as Secondmouse mentions in terms of keeping it in the hammock. Even when it was pulled over my head (which I agree is a good feature to have), there was too much material at the foot and it tended to slip out of the hammock at some point during the night. In the process of reconfiguring / narrowing the footbox, I wound up shortening the quilt. The new length was perfect in that my feet were fully in the footbox when the top was around my head. Between that and the narrower foot end I haven't had anymore issues losing my TQ in the middle of the night.

Short answer: I'd say that being able to cover your head with your feet fully in the footbox is the ideal length, at least for a non-summer TQ.

This is a good point. With my bridge hammock It's like I have a storage trunk at the foot end and the extra only serves to keep the feet warmer. It would be a pain if it wanted to fall out like a gather end tends to do.
