Hmm... I'm really looking at that Simplicity Tarp, but I'm not sure if I'd have enough to buy the Trail Lair, the tarp, and a good underquilt. Is the Trail Lair better enough to justify the extra $30? And would I need to get the fixed ridgeline with the Simplicity Tarp?

Like guns and computers, my recommendation on a first hammock would be, "Buy until it hurts." Get your foot in the door the most quality and built-in features you can afford from the get-go -- all the stuff you can't really add on later -- so that you don't waste $ replacing your initial gear down the line with what you really wanted in the first place. That said, prioritize, and that almost certainly means the hammock comes first. If you think you like the Trail Lair -- and I surely love mine -- order one and spec it exactly the way you want it; then you've got your hammock covered for the long haul. As long as you've got ten bucks left over to buy a blue tarp from Walmart to pitch over your new SLD hammock on your first trip out with it in case of rain, who cares? You've made the smart decision, and you're on your way to saving up for that sweet matching Simplicity silnylon tarp. (Trust me, because I did this backwards...) With a really nice, well made hammock and a good underquilt that you won't want to replace any time soon, IMHO I don't think you'll care if your first night out is under an inferior tarp as long as you and your gear stay dry. Right? Good luck.

PS: As Jared at SLD does, I strongly recommend you use some sort of structural ridge line with the SLD Trail Lair, regardless of your tarp selection and set-up. If you order the optional on SLD offers, you'll have extra strength, extra comfort, and extra clearance for the integrated bug net. My $0.02...

My 6-foot frame has weighed in at 135 all my life. I started with a Hennessy backpacker, and I loved it. I recently got an 11-foot hammock, and I think I like it a little better. The extra length gives a slightly flatter lay. The 11-foot hammocks are only slightly more expensive.

Anyone ever used a DH Darien? The Hennessy is a little too expensive for me right now unfortunately.

So what are you doing about a tarp and bugnet?

I'm only looking at hammocks that have an integrated bugnet (GTSKP, SLD Trail Lair, and DH Darien) and for a tarp I'll probably be buying the SLD Simplicity Asym Tarp.

Well, no one in their right mind is going to tell you that buying a Dream Hammock is a bad idea. Go forth.
