I think the 3 biggest differences would be:

    Double weighs more
Double is more convenient if you are going to use a pad for insulation, since you can slip a pad between the layers
Double is more firm, or supportive than a single layer of the same fabric. For some this is a positive, for others a negative.

Once I made the switch to underquilts, I have not had the need for a double, so mine are single layer now. Hope this helps.

There is a difference in weight carrying capacity in a single layer and a double layer of the same fabric. The feel of the stretch and give of the fabric is more pronounced in a single layer than a double again of the same fabric. Bugs bitting through a single is a known issue with a single. Double will weigh more again comparing equal fabrics. And the ability to pick 2 colors which can be flipped as your mood chooses.

I would agree; except that I love to stick my pants, shirt and socks between the layers that the pad used to slide. It helps dry them out and doesn't interfer with my comfort sleeping with the warmth of the quilt. The great thing is that in the morning, my cloths are a little dryer and warmer (on cold nights); while giving another purpose for the DL other than the weight capacity and Bugs that pgibson addressed so well.

There ain't no bugs on me
There may be bugs on some of you mugs
But there ain't no bugs on me.
