Just out of curiosity, does he have a tarp for his hammock? If so I'd guess he may be more comfortable (mentally) hanging as low as physically possible to the ground and have the tarp pitched tightly around him. That may make him feel a little more closed in and secure and hey, with all the gylines and tie-outs flying around there's plenty to trip up potential intruders. haha

Maybe I missed someone asking but why does he feel more secure in a bivy than a hammock?

I get serious anxiety when thinking about my next backpacking hammock trip. I simply can not wait but it so so hot.

He had mentioned in the past that he would probably just use one of those "blue plastic tarps" from Walmart for the sake of trying it out. Definitely not the best of options, but it'd suffice.

That I couldn't tell ya. I'd be worried about being trampled on in that thing.

Haha I hear ya. We've had a string of 10 days straight (or maybe more) of 100+ degree temperatures. It's finally cooled down to about 90 today. at least where we go backpacking at, it's up above 7,000 feet in elevation, and it's generally 20 degrees cooler up there than it is at home in the central valley.

I envy you. I just got serious about backing packing last fall/winter/spring and man I didn't know that I would miss it this much. In our area all the trails over grow and get dry along with the humidity it's just unbearable to hike. I need to move west

I was trying to post a video from a couple years ago, but apparently I can't upload this file type on Tapatalk. Basically it's a quick video from a backpacking trip we did in late September of 2014. While it was a scorching hot day back at home, we were getting snowed on at our campsite. Woke up super cold and just caught off guard by the storm. This was up at a lake in the Sierras around 8,800 feet elevation. That's some of the glories of backpacking out west. Haha

taught scuba for 15 years of my life including some time leading shark dives
so for years I swam and played with sharks 6 days a week

I am sure some who work in the woods full time in some ways understand animals very well like I do underwater creatures
my buddy who worked as a fly guide in Alaska was used to grizzly bears sure that would freak out some

IMHO I am more worried about each intersection on my way to camping much more than any critter when I get there
I worry more about the oh no I got a bad sliver in my hand ahhahhaahah
    or my dogs getting ticks

big critters tent or hammock does not matter watch some vids on how they can open up a car !!!!!

while it happens its so rare !!!!

Excellent points, ckmaui. The amounts of exposure time to the woods is a big difference between him and I. While I'm out there backpacking or day hiking at least once every 2 weeks (usually hiking once a week this time of year), he's only out there a few times throughout the year. Being more acquainted with the woods I'm sure definitely plays a crucial role in comfort levels.
