    soft Hammock

My scouting son wants a soft hammock...........??? what is said. "you know soft, not that slippery hard stuff"(his words)

Soooo that being case. Any ideas on "soft" hammock materials?

hmm...my thoughts on best "hand-feel" would be RSBTR's 1.6oz HyperD or Dutchware/MYOG's 1.6 Hexon. However, these might be thought of as slippery by some. Hard to guess what he's actually referring to.

Other nylon weaves exist out there that provide a very different feel over basic ripstop nylons. I don't think a "tablecloth" taffeta hammock or a "parachute nylon" could be thought of as "slick" or hard. Nylon taffeta, Taslan, and Taslite all have different feels and wouldn't be thought of as slick by most (I would think).

Polyester also has a different feel and is carried by a number of vendors.

My first recommendation would be narrowing down what he thought of as hard or slick. Many vendors will provide samples for a small cost and you could be sure he's getting something that he likes.

I'll second Hexon 1.6 as it's all i've got expeirence with. It's got an almost cotton like give in the fabric, and the texture is smooth like good linen but not slippery like argon or silk.

Can you get him to give you examples of what type of fabric he's thinking of? Depending on his age, I wouldn't be half surprised if he's got something like fleece or flannel in mind.

He's hammocking with other scouts who have ENO's and I saw him looking at a hammock in a sporting good store the other day by grand trunk I think.

So who knows to be honest, he's in one of those WOOT hammocks right now. So I bet they are just regular ripstop nylon.

I think he was looking at a polyblend hammock...........but im not a fabric guy.

It's a thermarest that he likes the feel of.
The main part he said he wanted was a larger hammock.

Are you going to sew him one? If so, go with 4 yards of HyperD 1.6 from RSBTR and make him an 11' gathered end hammock. Better than anything in a store...
