Welcome! I do "solo parent" camping/hiking year round with my 14 year old daughter and our two German shepherds. It's been a great parent-kid bonding activity over the years and I've never felt unsafe alone with my daughter off the beaten trail because the dogs are always along.

Welcome. If you are near east fork lake there are some easy backpacking trails to help build confidence.
We camp there often and just finished a trip nearly around the whole place.

    welcome to the madness.

Find a group hang in your area and attend it even if just to visit for a few hours. The old timers will be happy to show off their gear and if you ask nice they might even let you get in it. You can learn more from a visit to a group hang in a short time and get a chance to meet many of the folks posting on the forum. If you want to attend but do not have the hammock gear you need then ask and I bet they will be able to come up with gear for you and your son to use during the hang.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

That sounds like fun! I've never been to MI, but I've been wanting to visit.

I'm about 3-4 hours from East Fork. My son and I have been there to ride the train. There's a lot of stuff near us, too. I'm hoping to ease into an overnight away from a campground in the late summer/early fall. Give me a chance to get some gear I need and test it at less "roughing it" places first.

I've got the SouthEast and Midwest forums on subscribe to keep an eye on stuff. I really want to hit up that Mammoth Cave one, but it's a long drive to just stop in and I'm not sure I have time (or money) for a full weekend right before the next full weekend I'm doing down there (I'm there from the 10th-12th). Great tips, though. Thank you!

My son is about to turn 11 and he LOVES it. And we take our German Shepherd too. I can't take the dog when I camp alone at traditional campgrounds, because he displays a lot of very noisy separation anxiety (something he doesn't do at home at all). I could probably take him backcountry, though, since I won't be running into a bathroom or shower or camp store. So that's an idea!

I'm afraid we must be talking about 2 different places. East Fork state park is on the east side of Cincinnati and they don't have a train.

Oops! I was thinking of Big South Fork in KY.

I've just started taking my son (11) on overnight trips with me the past couple months. Memorial Day weekend was his first multi-night trip (3 nights). Get out there, start small, build your confidence, have fun!

    Welcome!
