    Walmart Challenge

The group I camp and hike with is wanting to do a "$50 Walmart challenge" for our fall trip. Essentially the group meets at Walmart in the morning and you have $50 and one hour to buy all of your gear. It's a test of your creativity and bush skills in general. I'd like to try to procure and build a hammock at camp using only materials from Walmart. They'll have to be cheap - I still need food, water, knife, etc. Having never done it before, could anyone chime in and let me know what sort of options I would have? From reading the forums for the last couple of years I think I can procure the fabric (e.g. tablecloth), but I'm worried about finding suitable cordage.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the materials I should aim for?

    Thanks!

Wow. This actually sounds really neat. Wish I had some more input. I have had some success hanging from paracord before but never overnight. They have it pretty cheap there. I'm supposing this is a minimalist trip. I would definitely be looking in the clearance section for your cloth. I can imagine even at Walmart you /could/ be looking at up to $30 for a table cloth. I might have to look into putting a thing like this together sometime.

Yeah, it should be interesting. We've all accumulated so much high speed gear over the years that camping has become as luxurious as home!

This should definitely take everyone out of their comfort zone. I suppose if you're not a "bushcrafter" it may not be appealing, but our group enjoys learning skills and techniques in the field, so it should be a good learning experience.

If the hammock idea fails, I can always ground camp (), but I'd like to give it a good try.

Walmart actually sells a decent hammock for under 25 bucks.

Ya know a friend of mine has proposed the same to me but with only $25 so,if you want some ideas on the entirety not just hammock is be happy to,give some tips n, hints just message me.
What I will say is if you go in (at least mine has it) the sewing section I bought some nylon there for a hammock for super reasonable ($1 a yard) so check there, they also sell canvas. In the hiking section they sell. Inexpensive paracord, and you can get a inexpensive ratchet strap foe a few bucks.
Blessings on your. Trip and learning preparedness

Yeah the blue foam pad will be tough to beat cost wise. What temps are you looking at?

I saw a couple guys on youtube that did something similar. They each came with tarps - one went to the ground, the other turned it into a hammock... it rained a LOT that night, and the poor guy on the ground didn't fare well at all :P

+1 on the ratchet straps ... sometimes in the automotive clearance section.

Sometimes have knives on clearance too (to stretch your $$)

    Blue foam pad

appropriate blanket / sleeping bag / comforter?

    water bladder w/ tablets

ramen, instant mashed potatoes, foil packed chicken, etc - all non-cook for this excercise (don't have to buy a stove)

How many days are you going for? I could suffer through a storm with a few trash bags and some duct tape for a night if I had to. Cool idea for a friendly challenge, but $50 each will likely net a few duplicate things unnecessarily. You might consider lowering the budget to $30/each and share your purchases.
