I have hung from paracord overnight myself. Just hang your hammock guitar string tight so when it stretches you get roughly a 30 degree angle. Also put sticks underneath the paracord wrapped around the tree - no need for straps. We used this technique at Philmont for bear bags (food for 12 people for 4 days at a time) as that is what they require. I would say it works pretty good since the same trees have likely been used every night, every summer for years.

I'd consider fashioning a bridge hammock out of a blue construction tarp. Maybe leave one side long enough to serve as a top cover. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dry-Top-Ta...aulin/19865372

Bottom insulation would be the blue foam pad.

Very true. My local Walmart has no fabric department at all and an anemic camping section, but they could easily supply the entire county with all the fishing gear and TV's they could ever want.

I like this idea a lot. A couple years ago a few of us did an overnight with "nothing more than what would fit in our pockets" That meant no shelter, no sleeping bag, no packs. The only non pocket items were a water bottle and a knife. It was an interesting experiment and I learned a lot in one night as it dropped into the 20s. I learned that I can in fact survive at least for a night in very cold weather and that I can make a manageable shelter with nothing more than a knife and a bit of 550 cord. I am going to propose the walmart challenge to my buddies. Thanks for the idea!

I think those cans have a plastic lining that would not be ideal for boiling water in afterwards.

Walmart has great dollar stuff. They have $1 knives, headlamps, lighters, and ponchos. They have the same blue tarp as any Menards for $7-8. They have cheap fabric (sometimes $1/yd) and if not there are always random fabric things in clearance aisles. I would bring a fosters beer and be the envy of camp lol before I made my pot out of it. The blue foam pad is a must snd I think ratchet straps may be long enough to use them as a cinch buckle system if you can find some heavy duty washers somewhere in there.

Get lost in the woods and find yourself again. A vacation,to me, is working with your hands and surviving because of the fruits of your labor. In the business world I teach;in the natural world I learn.

Yeah, you can sort by "Online" and "Available in Store" on the website. You can even search current stock at a given Walmart (stock updated at midnight each night).

Good point, thanks. I'll have to think of something else...
