Question Hammock for the fiancee (some tough requirements)

    Hi, folks,

First I want to say that I'm very impressed with this community. I run a forum dedicated to mind-body approaches to chronic pain, and I'd kill for this level of activity.

I'm trying to find a hammock system as a birthday gift for my fiancee, but I have some tough requirements. It's for lounging in a cabin near a lake in New Hampshire. Owning a hammock has been a lifelong dream for her, because she loves lounging around, daydreaming and relaxing.

    What I'm looking for
    1. Mosquito protection is paramount. Mosquitos seem to absolutely love biting her, and she gets huge welts when they do.
    2. If possible, I'd love something we can get via Amazon Prime, as it's free shipping and we're going up this weekend.
    3. The camp has deep meaning to me and hammocking is perfect for her, so I'm willing to pay for quality and quick shipping.

As you can tell, this isn't the typical "camping hammock" request. Weight doesn't matter. I loved camping back in the day and have great respect for good gear, but we're in a neighborhood and I don't want her to feel like she's in a military bivouac of mosquito netting and guy wires. I hope this doesn't sound superficial, but I want it to look like a hammock, not something out of science fiction. Something that would fade into the background of forest green and brown would be nice.

    So....
    • Mosquito protection,
    • can get it shipped quickly,
    • looks relaxing, natural and inconspicuous.,
    • ... and of course, comfy!

    Any ideas?

ENO Doublenest, Atlas Straps and the ENO bugnet(forget what it's called).

These are very simple setups, and one of the few complete sets that are generally in-stock vs. custom made. They are good for lounging and napping, but not so much for full night sleeps due to being a relatively short hammock.

Dutchware 11 ft. hammock and Fronkey bugnet. I ordered an olive green Dutch PolyD 1.4 hammock with Dutch Whoopie Hook suspension on Monday and received it on Saturday.

Not Amazon but Dutchwear is going to be hard to beat. Order the double layer should help with bugs biting through the hammock and add on the Fronkey Bugnet and suspension. Should be great for napping. It's good enough for camping but will still work perfect for the porch.

If you want something more traditionally hammock looking check into a bridge style hammock like the Ridgerunner.

If ordering off Amazon is a requirement then I would go with the Hennessy Deep Jungle. Double layer on the bottom and built in bug net. From pictures it appears to be the zipper model so she can flip the screen back if she wants. I have two HH and use them exclusively in bug season.

If you don't have to go the Amazon route then I concur with a Dutch 11' but have it made double layer since she hates bugs, then add on a Fronkey net.

I'll concur with the Hennessy Deep Jungle...tarp, pad, hammock, tree straps = good to go for lounging, napping, sleeping.....whilst keeping the biting bugs at bay.

Perhaps you should consider relaxing your requirements. If not you will be limited to a handful of mediocre hammocks.

Given some time, you could present her with a Wilderness Logics LiteOwl http://www.wildernesslogics.com/LITE-OWL-LITE-OWL.htm Super comfortable, double layer gathered end hammock with, tree straps, whoopie slings and standard knotty mods.

I suggest pairing that with a Butt-In-A-Sling Nano Buginator http://www.buttinasling.com/bbu.html Having the option of using the bugnet only when mosquitoes are problematic will certainly make using the hammock more enjoyable.

These items would not likely arrive this weekend. Though you might contact each by phone. Marty at Wilderness Logics is super accommodating and Shane at Butt-In-A-Sling have been quick to respond when I've reached out through e-mail.

These items are not available through Amazon, REI or anywhere you've shopped. These are specialty items...how special is your fiancee?

I missed that part about Amazon Prime. As OCDave said, you're not going to get much hammock gear worth a crap off Amazon. There's ENO, Hennessy, and a bunch of hammocks nobody has ever heard of. Amazon is just not a place most experienced hammockers shop. About the only thing I'd buy on Amazon is a Hennessy. That was my first hammock, but they're heavier and not nearly as comfortable as the hammocks offered by our cottage vendors.

I'd put my purchase off until I had more time to research.
