    Hammock length-Ridge-line ?

Hey--- fellas, I'm back with ?? Took measurement of ridge line, 89 inches. Loosened ridge-line measured hammock being taut without ridge-line connected, 105 inches. This is a Blackbird 1.1 double bottom. Took the measurements given me yesterday for 10 foot BB by 2 Samuel 22 and others, which is 101 inches. Extended ridge line to 101 inches. Tried that length, seems ok.
Is this the correct measurements for my hammock? 105 inches is short of ten feet by fifteen inches.

It's typically suggested that a ten foot hammock have a 100" ridge line (83% of 120"). So at 101", yeah you're right there. Most folks will start at the 83% length and tinker with it from there to find what's most comfortable.

I have actually found that 83% is almost always just right.

Campdavid, If 100 or 101 inches is the correct length, from what point does the measurement begin? Does it start at the front of the hammock end where the Amsteel gray is wraped around the end of the hammock or is it some other place?

If its a whipped hammock you can't caculate the knots into your measurement. So measure knot to knot. Channeled hammocks measure the entire lenght of the fabric.
    Hope that helps you.

Yeah, just measure from connection point to connection point. The 83% thing is just a good place to start. Everyone is different, and so are hammocks. Play around with the length until you find what's most comfortable. For me personally, I generally go shorter than 83%. I can get more diagonal and lay more flat, and it gets my legs further away from the ridge of fabric. Laying that diagonal presents some other issues with sealing the UQ on the foot end, but loosening the cinch helps with that.

A lot of variables involved in getting everything setup really well, but you'll know what you like and what needs adjustment by laying in it.

    Have fun!

My wife and I recently spent a good part of a day testing just ridgeline lengths on 11' and 11 1/2' hammocks. Using adjustable amsteel ridgelines, we went as far as 6" in both directions of 83%. However, while I could adjust the whoopies longer/shorter, I could not adjust the fixed mount points in the house. Because of this, suspension angles would be less than ideal nearing the extremes. Even with that realization in mind, our conclusion was that 83% was close enough for us. 2" either side of 83% made no significant difference to us. 4" was livable but didn't generate any excitement. 6" was unacceptable, especially to the long (tight) side.
