    Tarp Stuff Sack

So I am in the middle of making my first tarp. I got the 12' Hex Tarp kit from RipStop. My question....How do you get an idea of how big to make your stuff sack?

I have a couple sacks around I could test fit it in to get an idea, I was just curious if anybody has formula or something.

I've always stuffed it inside a pillowcase to get the general dimensions. I like to try to get them approx equally tall as the circumference or so.

On underground quilts website where they are selling stuff sacks and thier new tough sack it breaks down the sacks into sizes they suggest for tarps, hammocks, quilts and so on, so this should give you an idea of what size a certain size tarp would fit in.
    I hope this helps.
I am not suggesting buying a sack from them but rather using thier site as a refferance for making your own based on what others would use.

I have two basic sizes I use for make stuff sacks and both are cardboard patterns: 15x15 and 20x20.

The 15x15 makes a stuff sack about 4.5" in diameter and 13" tall. The 20x20 makes a stuff sack about 6" in diameter and 18" tall.

For my tarps, the smaller one works for shortie hexes (like a WB Edge) and asyms. The larger one works for longer hexes, rectangulars, and winter tarps. I keep them in tarp sleeves all the time. They only go in stuff sacks for storage purposes.

I always try with a plastic bag. I cannot recommend making stuff sacks small. It makes it harder to pack whatever its for and if it’s a bit oversized its soft and can take form around other stuff in the backpack. It can’t if its hard packed.

I just finished a tarp from Ripstop By The Roll too using their 4000 coating (not sure of the official name). I was amazed at how much the tarp stuffed down. If I really wanted to push it, I could get it a little bigger than a soda pop can without guy lines. So I made a longer stuff sack that has the ability to roll the top down and clip it to the bottom. Works great.

I make 13 X 17 for my 8 X10 rectangular tarps. Big enough for tarp, stakes and suspension. I start with 13 x17 piece of material. Finished size about 10 3/4 long X 4 3/4 diameter.
