Hammocking accident - young life lost

    Article from USA TODAY:

13-year-old girl dies in hammock accident

    http://usat.ly/1TlZ1p3

Seems the hammock was attached to a brick pillar that was not anchored.
    Very sad.

As the popularity of hammocking increases, it is increasingly necessary to share best practices for a safe hang.

That's awful. My sympathies and prayers to the parents and family. So sad.

Horrible!! I remember the video last year showing a dead tree falling on a girl. No major injuries but a similar incident. Jumping in puts a crazy amount of stress on the support, but of course that's not something kids are thinking about at the time.

I read that yesterday and it is indeed really sad. I've noticed at the park in our neighborhood kids hanging their ENO's as high as they can get them, spinning them around, jumping in them with 3-4 kids. As odd as it sounds, I had a safety talk with my daughter and she has specific places in our yard that she can hang hers with strict rules about no more than two at a time, no jumping or swinging. I was really thinking more along the lines of "broken bone", "concussion", "ripped hammock" in terms of the risks.

It's really sad for those parents who probably had no clue about the forces involved or potential risks, just heartbreaking.

How terrible. I fear as hammocks gain popularity this will become an increasing issue.

As a father of three, my heart breaks for this family. Life is so very fragile. Hope she is resting well in the arms of the Lord.

+1 on spreading the news of best practices. Might even be time to include more specific hanging instructions especially with commercially available products like ENO. Of course many folks won't read them, but still.

One of my employees has a GT and I was showing him how to properly hang and use it. Told me he like to hang it up real high to stay safe from bears. Uh! Told him, blacks can climb, Browns will just reach up or take the tree down and there's a far greater risk of breaking ones neck falling to the ground than a bear attack. Geez!
