Looking for opions regarding material of under quilt.

    Hello All,

Looking to start my own DIY underquilt projects(2 To be exact).

During my research I noticed a maker of underquilts selling an underquilt with Cuben Fiber ( a vapor barrier) right against bottom of hammock. From this fact I take vapor produced by body is not that big of an issue.

Taking this into consideration, and the fact storage size is not an issue ( for the time being) my plans for my underquilt:

Top layer (Layer in contact with bottom of hammock) 1.1 silnylon . Will have 2 12" zippers under baffles to allow venting if needed ( just in case).

Next layer 7.5 Apex Climashield insulation.

Next layer SOL thin rescue blanket material.

    Outside layer 1.1 silnylon.

One quilt will be 4" longer and wider than the other to allow the larger quilt to fit right over the smaller quilt easier.

I will purchase a down top quilt, and it will breath.

So for now size and weight do not matter for my initial start.

Any thoughts good or bad appreciated.
    Thanks Larry

If it can't breathe, you will get condensation between you and the waterproof surface.

Ditch the silnylon and the space blanket - they both have no place in an underquilt (or a topquilt). Out of all the vendors who make underquilts, I can name one small cottage vendor that puts silnylon on their underquilt, http://www.keepcalmandhikeon.com. Every other quilt vendor wouldn't think of using silnylon on an UQ or TQ because it doesn't breathe. Synthetic or down insulation both have to breathe to be effective.

Vapour from your body can be a massive issue. Only breathable fabrics for quilts for me.
    Especially in cold damp conditions.
Ultralight Taffeta is a great fabric for quilts.

It is possible to use a non breathable fabric and be comfortable.
Have a look for Insultex (abbreviated as IX) UQ's in the forums.
The golden rule is the same as is standard practice in building: "keep the vapour barrier warm"
If you decide to use a mixture of insulation types don't put a breathable insulation between you and the vapour barrier.
The cuben fiber right against the hammock is the right way to do it, ideally with some insulation outside of that.
So... I think that your plan is a good one except for the mylar film (SOL rescue blanket) outside of the climashield.
If you want to include it have it next to the hammock.

An insulated vapor barrier may be marginally better than an uninsulated one, but it's still a vapor barrier and condensation will happen (if you're prone to that, as most people seem to be).

What are you trying to achieve with the silnylon over a breathable material (argon is a popular and much lighter choice)?

I agree with the others that it's likely to cause a bit of condensation at best and lots at worst. Why use it? tf your worried about wind or rain splash back you can just make a basic under quilt protector from sil nylon and only put it on when needed. That provides protection but can still hang loosely enough to reduce condensation in it (although it will still gather some in some situations).
