Thanks. The NPO (nothing by mouth) vs hydrating would be an interesting debate. I think in the video you said he had 2 leg fractures, so there was no way for him to walk. I think you guys did a great job giving him some shelter from the sun and wind.

He could have been the only one there who bothered to take down the very information that brought the help that was needed. Having seen all this I will never pass by one of those boards again without doing what Hickory so wisely did.
Excellent observation and point! Having seen this I will never pass by the board again. Thank you.

Jeremy's fall certainly makes us all think about the unthinkable. While Grits' list of wilderness first aid classes is helpful, it seems more convenient for those living in the northeast.

I found this schedule from another group (National Outdoor Leadership School / Wilderness Medicine Institute) that includes classes throughout the country, including the western US: https://www.nols.edu/portal/wmi/courses/wfa/

    Hope this listing is helpful...

Any may best thoughts for Carolinabackbacker's quick recovery.

Myself and Swink1 go to the Gorge several hand full of trios a year and it is a place that can really test you. Glad we didn't lose a Hammock Forum member in that place. Good vibes my man for a return trip soon.

Those Gorge Rats get a big thumbs up for handling a bad situation well...
I'm gonna visit Jeremy sometime soon.

BTW, according to DarkByrd's annotations, Jeremy fell down the hypoteneuse of a 3-4-5 triangle.
That means that, although there were places where the drop was sheer, it was generally a 53* slope.

He said either the rock broke or he slipped trying to scale the wall with the tree we had to climb. That started the fall.
As far as getting down to him and giving comfort. We were told not to give him water though after 3 or 4 hours we gave him sips. We also let him smoke a cigarette as it seemed to calm him. Kinda like the old war movies. We had plenty of water but Hickery's space blanket was invaluble to use as shade for him as we were in direct sun and wind all afternoon. Plus it was bright orange so they could get eyes on us. Hickery bandaged his hand as it was punctured but the best we could do was just be by his side and comfort him and cajole him. Didtact him a bit. Just be there as brothers. We were told not to move him but we shifted him once after accessing. Long time to be down there standing by waiting for aid. 5 or 6 hours.
Not an easy rescue situation but turned out well in the end. He lives to hike again.

I think a orange space blanket will be on my list to get in the first aid part of my kit. I am curious to the instructions of not to give him fluids by mouth. I have quite a few years as a FF/Emt and I'm pretty sure a 5-6 hours rescue would warrant me giving him something to drink for sure. That is a long long time to be thirsty and possibly become dehydrated. Especially if it were a hot day.

I'd be curious if anyone could chime in the pros and cons on giving water by mouth on a situation like this. I know we NEVER gave fluid by mouth in the ambulance but this seems to be a different situation.

I agree Rob, I will check out those numbers and write them down also from now on.

I'll be honest, I posted earlier but I haven't read the entire thread since then, BUT...

Now that we know Jeremy's okay, I'd like to ask the question of EVERYONE involved... Is there anything you would have done differently or more importantly something you wished you had with you? I'm definitely not trying to minimize what happened to CB... But instead, I hope we can all learn from it... I don't know Jeremy personally BUT that seems like something CB would be really stoked about.
