    Need help with insulation

I need help. We are going camping and my son wants to use the yukon hammock my wife bought as a extra. I don't have any underquilt he can use as I'm just getting into hammocks myself. Here's my question what could I do so he sleeps warm. He will be using a yukon tarp with it. I have a kelty 20' mummy bag and a couple cheap 40' bags. Could he use one of these without a pad and still be warm.

That's a tricky question there is more information need. Are the bags down? What's the expected temps? The age of your son can make a difference if he's older he can stand the cold better?

Doubtful, you're going to find out you need more insulation under you than on top. Down or synthetic, doesn't make a while lot of difference, I'd find a pad.

They are not down but synthetic bags. It is suppose to get to 50 degrees. He is 10. He has had no interest in using it till today now he is insisting to use it this weekend which leaves me no time. Thanks

CCF pad from walmart is cheap and should do the trick. Military surplus sleep pad, if there's a store near you will do as well.

I find that my skinny 12 y/o son doesn't weigh enough to compress synthetic insulation and he's fine down to a bags rating.

Get a ccf pad from Walmart. Insulation will compress underneath you whether you're a 68 lb. weakling or a 300 lb. professional wrestler.

Just not something I'd advise, sending any kid out without a pad or UQ. I've always been extremely careful when it comes to equipping my kids because one bad experience can turn them off hammock camping for life. I felt kind of bad even letting them use ccf pads because Dad was too cheap to buy an UQ.

My oldest son still hasn't forgiven me for taking him spring skiing one year. Sure, it was slushy, and maybe we shouldn't have been on a black diamond trail, but I certainly never thought he would catch an edge and go off a 70 ft. cliff.

+1 pad, its cheap and easy. I've used mine down into the 20's, just watch for condensation @ 40° and above, if you keep a blanket or something between him and the pad it'll be ok (i sleep inside my bag)
