    Sew on Dutch Clips

How much stitching is necessary to not sacrifice any strength? I may have gone a tad overboard on my first set of straps.

Haha, I weigh 165 and use 2 bar tacs. You will probably always lose some strength, but you must be at the minimum loss there

I use 3 to 4 inches of box stitching similar to your photo. DIY Gear Supply has a guide... http://diygearsupply.com/diy-guides/hammock-suspension/

I do 3 inches with three lines sewn along the length and a few bar tacks for extra strength. Like this

    ---|------|----|-----|-- ect
    ---|------|----|-----|--
    ---|------|----|-----|--

I'm wondering if it's excessive. Any breaks shown in pull tests show a lot of the breaks occur after the sewing. Not in the layered loop/sewn area.

I have done many breakage tests and the W inside a box is consistently the strongest. However when the webbing breaks it never has broken at the stitching, even with bar tacks, which surprised me. I would assume that would weaken the webbing at that point but it always breaks in the middle or the apex of the loop.

The only problem I see with the way you did it is you use more webbing which adds weight.

The way I did it also makes that area really stiff. I am not super weight concise yet, but I am working on making lighter gear.

    +1

I have seen several comments both here and in other places in agreement that the breakpoint is rarely if ever at the stitch points and that a couple of box stitches seems to do the trick.
