Rules call for groups of 7 or more to use designated spots. If we end up with 7 it won't be a problem but more and we'll want to split up into two groups. Easy to do in the area that I'm thinking about. Can easily accomodate twice that number if we split up and the two groups don't have to be separated by more than 30 yards or so; so we can share a fire. If we end up with 10 I think we can all hang togther as this area is a long time established "primitive" campsite even though it's not on the map .
In this location there's also a long established fire ring so having a fire isn't a problem. In 15 years I've never seen a park ranger anywhere on the Whispering Pines trail. Still we can be fully compliant. Frankly I doubt we'll have more than 7-10 and you know how people tend to drop out at the last minute.
I've uploaded a map. If you start at the trail head to Whispering Pines trail at the top of the map and go counter-clockwise, you'll come to a spot between the two ends of the White Oaks trail, WC1 and WC2. That's the spot. There's also an opportunity for people to put in some miles on Saturday or Sunday if they care to but the direct route to this location is short, only a few miles. I'd be happy to go early on Saturday and simply "hold" that spot. Plenty of time to work it all out but for those of you who've never hiked at Hawn, you'll be in for a real treat and I'd encourage you to hike either the northern loop or the combined northern and southern loops of the Whispering Pines Trail! You're in for a treat!

ADDITIONAL RULES FOR BACKPACKING TRAILS
All backpackers must register at the trailhead or park office before starting their trip.
Groups of seven or more persons are permitted to camp only in designated areas. While smaller groups are not required to use the designated areas, they must camp at least 100 feet from the trail, 200 feet from any major public use area, and at least one-fourth mile from the trail entry/exit point.
Campfires are prohibited unless there is a designated backpacking campsite where a fire ring has been provided. On most trails, stoves will be needed for cooking.
Thanks for the great info Gideon! If things go as plan I will get there Friday afternoon and can check things out too. If not will be there early Sat. and meet up with you and anyone else that can be there early. I am definitely looking forward to some hiking and good fellowship.

The weekend of the 5th and 6th is on the calander. We (wife and i) will be watching this thread to make sure it stays that way. There is a possibility that we will have all five of us but it could be just the two of us. Either way, hike in or not, we are in.

This is on my calendar as well, I'm excited about it! This will be my first group hang; how many of you will be bringing kids along?

My children are older; I often invite them but they rarely make it as their lives are quite busy and they don't enjoy the woods like I do. One of my daughters has gone a few times; including on a Bell Mountain hike. Another "must" see hike in Missouri.
Having said that, I would expect our group to be kid friendly and I think it would be awesome if you brought your kids. It's not that far to the site and they'll love the area. Just don't forget to bring the marshmallows!

We have three. They might all be coming. Depends on what they want to do amd the weather. They should be set with insulation for the most part, but if it's very cold, they won't be down for it.
