But there's still plenty of hiking available if you do the entire northern and southern loops of the whispering pines trails.

Is that the site on the "connector trail" that cuts off part of the north loop and connects to a point near the intersection of the two loops? I was down at Hawn a couple of weeks ago, and checked out that very spot. It's a nice site, but do you think it will accommodate all of the folks that have expressed interest (plus one more including me!)?

The nice thing about Hawn is the fact that it's mostly a mature forest. By the time of the hang most of the underbrush will die down and there should be plenty of great spots to hang anywhere there.

Hi Kevin, the place I have in mind is on the NW side of the whispering pines trail between the 2 White Oaks trail connectors. It's on Pickle Creek and there's an established fire ring. We could easily hang 15 or more dispersed in the mature pines in that area. And of course, not everyone who's expressed interest will end up making it; as much as I hope they do, they never do. So no worries on the group; we can disperse and then gather around the fire pit to enjoy time together. I hope you make it!

New guy here. I just found this forum last night through a Facebook post. I am new to hammock camping and so far it's awesome! Someone on Facebook sent me a link to this thread. I'd really like to try and make it out to this hang. I do have a question though (actually I have several but I will limit it to this one for now)...Given the time of year, how much insulation do you all think is needed as an UQ? Currently I only use a Thermarest TrailPro air matress. It was fine for early spring. Curious to know thoughts on the matter for this specific event.

    Regards,
    Scott

She knows the r-value on your pad and check online for the temp rating to match your pad . If used in the early spring it should be good for this trip .

The pad has an R-value of 4.0 and is rated at 30 degreees.

Hi Wraiith, welcome to the forum and hammock camping! One never knows what the weather will be like but that time of the year the average low is around the mid-thirties. Of course it can be in the 40's or below freezing. If the pad is rated to 30, it will be okay for anything in the mid-thirties but it also depends on you. I'm a cold sleeper so I like for my insulation to always be rated a minimum of 10 degrees lower than the lowest temp I'm expecting during an outing. For this outing I'll probably have a 20 degree under quilt but if it's colder than normal, I'll drop down to a 0 degree quilt. You can do a few things to help out. The right base layer on you, good warm socks and hat, even adding a blue pad from Walmart.

I hope you can join us; it would be great to meet you!

Although time won't allow for me to make this, I'm really happy to see a Missouri Group Hang kick off this well. Sounds like there will be a lot of great people out there and be a great opportunity for some of the newer hangers.

Hope to see this continue to grow. Good luck guys!
