    Raleigh camping???

Hello, just moved to Wilmington NC (from Pittsburgh) and will be on my way to Raleigh this weekend to pick up the fiance. Just curious if anyone has done any hammock camping around Raleigh or somewhere along the way. I looked at Croatan National Forrest, but its a little out of my way, tho not counting it out yet. Thanks everyone!

Oh where to start! There are some great spots depending on how long you're in Raleigh and whereabouts you'll be. Falls Lake and Jordan Lake both have a lot of options. If you want something simple and quick right in the heart of things, Umstead. Umstead is near the airport so it bothers some people with planes.

Be careful with the Falls Lake and Jordan Lake areas, as parts of them are considered state gamelands. Deer season started last Saturday (bowhunting) and continues until Jan 1. This time of year it is wise to have some blaze orange if you are outside of designated camping areas.

I should have mentioned that Croatan is also a gameland. Here is a link to all of the state public gameland areas in NC. I am not meaning to discourage you, as these are multi-use areas where hiking and camping are perfectly ok… just to encourage you to wear blaze orange and be aware. Hope you trip is fun, and welcome to NC!

Designated camping sites in Falls lake, Jordan lake or Umstead park are probably your best bets. All 3 have flushing toilets and showers. Umstead is a bit noisy with the planes as mentioned above. Try one of them out.

Jordan Lake is good in the Raleigh area. Around Wilmington, CB State Park is good as mentioned, or if you have access to watercraft, there are several places on Masonboro and on the dredge islands in the river that are good for camping.

Bugs are still out and ticks are common. It hasn't gotten cold yet.

I like Parker's Creek at Jordan lake. You can make reservations:

Ravens Rock is a bit out of the way but another nice place to camp (without facilities):

Shinleaf off of New Light road is nice and the Mountains to Sea trail runs through it.
    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.
