I was just up in northern Minnesota a few weeks ago. I stepped out of my car in untreated clothing, and immediately got swarmed. I dove back in the car and changed into permethrin treated clothes (Sawyer, ala Wally World), and never got a bite afterwards. I treated my hammock and bug net when I returned home, and slept in the back yard a few nights... nada. No bites, no buzzes, no anything. Best product I've used for insect repellent, ever.

I only had 4oz left and I wanted to get stuff treated yesterday. I ended up with about 80oz, so slightly weaker by a few ounces. Still smelled strong AF. Mixed in a 5-gal bucket, I was able to easily treat my hammock, pants, 2 t-shirts, pair of socks. Then I poured the solution into a spray bottle and did my pack, shoes, 2 hats and hung everything up.

After pouring the solution into the clear bottle I noticed it was now brownish, similar to a dark apple cider. I wonder if it took some color out of something, or if one of the items was just dirty. I can't imagine since the clothes were previously cleaned and the hammock hasn't been used much.

Everything was hanging in the wind last night for a couple hours and now in my garage. I finally remembered what this stuff smells like!!!! Years ago I bought some freshener spray for cars and the scent was "That New Car Smell". I remember it smelling more like a carpet or shoe store. Some kind of leather/rubber mix.

Would you guess from (unnoticeable) dirt in material, or from the actual dye or natural fabric color?

Now that I think of it, I "think" my hammock is perfectly clean, but that mesh on the Blackbird likely holds fine dust/grime.

    I dont know
But I can tell you this
Everything was freshly washed before treating
I treat every 5 washes because I hate ticks and do everything in my power to prevent as much as I can
I think it's just due from clothing
    Or my washing machine $ucks

The 16oz concentrate bottle has been around $32 on amazon for a while. It briefly dropped to $23 last night so I picked up another bottle.

Also, anyone know how long the leftover permethrin in my spray bottle is good for? Or should I just discard it right away after the soaking?

Sawyer’s website says it has an effective shelf life of 10 years if stored in a cool/dry place. I’ve read on many blogs that it shortens to 3-5 years once opened, but I’ve seen no scientific studies for that

I'm guessing their ready to use formula stores better than the mix but I have no idea. I guess I'll try and use it up within a few weeks to be safe.

Every year I soak my clothes in permethrin, and spray it on my shoes, hammock, quilts, etc.

Ive heard and seen to many awful side effects from people getting Lyme disease and dont want to take the chance myself. Its a safe, proven and effective chemical. Follow the directions and its totally fine to use.

    Do you use permethrin?

The container of JT Eaton Permethrin that I buy on Amazon each year is sufficient to treat my gear (including my bug net) and clothing. If there's any left, we use it to treat the clothing we wear when gardening or doing yard work.
