To me, all this boils down to the lesser of two evils..... Picardin vs West Nile, Permithrin vs Lyme disease, etc.
Perhaps another alternative is to stay home on the couch with TV remote on your lap while eating crackers with spray cheese. Not exactly a healthy choice either. LOL

I'm strongly in favor of Permethrin. I've watched mosquitoes land on Permethrin-treated clothing, die, and fall off. I used DEET before that, which everyone knows is nasty stuff but has never been shown to be carcinogenic and it has been around since the 40s. People worry about these chemicals but don't seem too bothered by the plastic and other chemicals they ingest on a daily basis. I'll take chemicals over bugs but hey, you gotta HYOH.

Yes, the last two bug seasons in the ADKs. I treated my clothing (including hats), backpack and hammock. It helped - I used very little bug repellent on myself. I bought it on Amazon and mixed the solution according to the instructions on SectionHiker. I bought gloves, googles and mask at Home Depot. I soaked most clothing items in 5 gallon pail and then put them in one gallon freezer bag with some additional solution (left it in there for a couple of hours). I sprayed my pack.

Way better than the woman that used kerosene and accidentally set her daughters head on fire!

Ditto! I've hiked through tick-infested areas and the few ticks that bothered to stick to my pants soon turned turtle and fell off. I'm skeptical about any chemical on or near my skin, but it beats getting Lyme.

Every time I see this thread highlighted on the main list the first thing that pops into my head is "Do you even Permethrin bro??" So that's going to be in my head when I'm soaking my gear this spring. :/

I really enjoy this thread revival to help kick off the tick and mosquito season. Kind of gives me a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that spring is getting closer.
