Is there any downside to soaking? It seems that it would be much simpler to just mix up a couple gallons of mix and pile all your clothing in it. Let it soak and hang it up. I have some military permethrin kits that are basically bags that are impregnated with the stuff. Ill use those for my packs.

So the stuff breaks down in 6 months after applied. I don't want to keep track of what/when I treated gear so I guess right before a trip would be a good idea and be done unless you're doing some heavy washing.

Yeah I figure I would just treat everything at the beginning of each season and more if I needed to. I can treat twice a year to cover me pretty well I imagine. Soaking just seems to make more sense because it is more economical in both time and money.

Are you soaking the complete hammock systems? I have a Clark NX 270 and I'm a little nervous about soaking but I'm not sure I'll get the coverage with spray.

I just spray the hammock and bug net.
I don't spray underquilts or underquilt protectors because bugs aren't getting through them anyway.

Slept outside for 14 months next to a swamp. Aside from burning a little citronella or using a thermacell occasionally, that's all I did.

I plan to soak it. I have a DREAM and I am going to just soak the whole system, whoopies and all (unless someone has good reason not to). Im also going to soak all my clothes, some bandannas for the dog, the dogs pack, and all the gf's stuff. Ill spray our shoes and packs, or use the military kits I have to do those so I don't have submerge them. I think that coupled with some good bug spray, either deet or picaridin, will ensure some bug free days in the piney woods. We do the majority of our hiking in the winter, when ticks are mostly dormant, but I have come home to still find ticks on me. The dog is on bravecto and has a lymes vaccination so now I am just trying to keep her from getting bit in the first place.

I just bought my first permethrin yesterday at tractor supply. Was $20 for a quart so it should last me practically for the rest of forever if I only go through 2 oz per season. I mixed it up in my handheld sprayer 2 oz to 40 oz water and sprayed both my wife and my hammocks and our nice small 10 man tent (I know I know... wrong forum for tents). Still haven't convinced the wife that hammock camping is viable, she wants the air mattress and all that junk (hence the ginormous tent plus the tent was free). It's our first camping trip in a couple years, so I'm hoping to convert her next weekend. After it had dried, I saw three flies hit the side of our tent and die on contact. Long story short, I'm never going out with out that magical permethrin barrier again.

I just picked up a 32oz of Framguard Permethrin at my Blain's Farm and Fleet for $17.99(32oz bottle). Its the 13.30% concentrate. So if I have done my calculations correct I would add 1oz Permethrin to 24oz of water to get .5% mix, making the cost roughly $3 a gallon to make. Not to shabby.

I plan to soak my gear and clothes for the season in a .5% solution. I am also planning on using it to treat my lot at the club we belong to (AKA campground) following the dilution ratios recommended by the manufacture. Tons of Ticks there and the kids get a couple every year no matter what we put down on the grass and trees or what we sprayed on the kids. Fingers crossed this works for all my needs. I would much rather treat clothes and shoes then continually spray the kids (and me) with chemical after chemical.
