Treating gear is just adding another level of protection. I don't treat my sleep gear other than the hammock body itself. I've found skeeters can actually punch right through the fabric. I treat my hiking pants to keep ticks/chiggers from climbing up into areas they don't belong. Overall, I don't see any reason to treat any down and certainly not my tarp. I did treat my UQP once but that's because I had a bit of solution left over. Sometimes in the summer I don't use any type of insulation other than the UQP. I figure treating it is some cheap insurance in case it touches the ground and picks up some critters I'd rather not share the bed with.

I agree with Zukiguy. Mosquitos can bite through your hammock even if it is a double layer. Treating your pants and shoes is useful because ticks get on you from the ground level or low brush and crawl up. With that being said, I want to treat most of my stuff because I'll be out in black fly season in Maine so I want protection from them as well.

Spray your gear because permethrin is metabolized by the human body too quickly to be effective. Use permethrin because it's more effective than deet, doesn't have the terrible smell, and KILLS THE bugs that it doesn't deter.

Sawyer used to sell a kit with stronger permethrin that you diluted in a plastic bag -- you then roll your items up, secure them with rubber bands, and soak them in the diluted solution for two or three hours (don't remember exactly), then hang to dry. The kit contained the permethrin, the plastic bag, rubber bands, and plastic gloves.

Since the kit went off the market, I have been using the stuff from Tractor Supply. No problems and no bugs.

You might be able to find the video with the actual instructions by Sawyer if you look around. Here is one that shows the general method. Treating my clothes with (diluted) 36.8% Permethrin

Wear the gloves. Check your math -- watch your decimal point -- you ONLY want 0.5% -- more is not better.

The soak kits are still available...the permethrin concentration is identical to that in the Sawyers trigger spray bottles. You can soak using that, diluted 2:1with water. $10 for 12 Oz @ WM.

Funny timing. A mosquito got into the house last night. It was late, quiet, except for the low buzz of a mosquito. I couldn't find it in the low light. I thought to myself, "I wish I was in my hammock treated with permethrin because this mosquito is so noisy I can't sleep".

to those of you who have used both (diluted) martin and sawyer:

do you think the martin stuff is just as odor-free as the sawyer?

The Walmart Sawyer 0.5 bottle gets maybe a pair of socks and pants and a shirt or 2. This makes the concentrate solution very affordable IMO.

Zukiguy, remember it won't wash away when the solution has dried. It is bound to the fibers at the molecular level so you don't have to worry about sweat.

Use on all your external gear like packs, hats and such so you don't bring home any hitchhikers. Even on your hammock and bugnet.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
