+1 on the Martins. I just had to go take a look. I got the little 8oz dispenser bottle to try it out. I've had it a few years. Diluting it 20:1 (1oz to 20oz water) gets enough solution to treat a pair of pants and maybe a shirt.

I got this after a bunch of mosquitoes bit through the bottom of my single layer and ate my son on a trip years ago. Also, treating my hiking pants has kept the chiggers out of my "tender spots". I'm not a fan of treating socks, briefs, or t-shirts (anything that's likely to get wet with sweat). Hammocks and bugnets are fine.

Thank you everyone for your recommendations! It's good to know that Martin's works well!

I plan to treat most of my stuff (hammocks, chairs, shoes, pants, hats, backpacks, midlayers, dog bed, etc.). We'll treat everything once the hammocks arrive.

I felt a little leery about it at first too but it seems to have a low risk level once it dries. To me, the risk of exposure to permethrin is outweighed by negative consequences of bites and tick borne illnesses.

It is 10% so I dilute it to a .5% solution. Some brands have a petrochemical base and smell really bad.
I bought myself a bottle of Martin's permethrin maybe 20 years ago and used it around the house. Frankly I liked the petrochemical smell. Then when my old bottle ran out I bought a new one, and there's no petrochemical smell anymore. I mix mine up to a .5% solution in a garden sprayer and spray my hiking/camping clothing.

I went ahead and bought Martin's permethrin because the cis/trans ratio is identical to the Sawyer product. The TSC version had a ratio that is slightly off. I also prefer the simple math for diluting Martin's 10% to .5%. Fingers crossed we will have a year free of ticks. Thank you again everyone!

I picked up the 12 oz bottle in the camping section at Walmart. Any idea how much gear I'll be able to cover with this? I'd like to do my hammock with integrated bugnet, pants, 2 shirts, socks, hat and backpack. Not sure if I should do my UQ and UQP and tarp. I'm kind of leery of spraying it on down gear.

It depends on the concentration. If you have a 10% (like Martin's) then you will need to dilute it to .5% (a 20 to 1 ratio). So, you could make 240oz of solution at .5%. Zukiguy found that 20oz was enough to treat a pair of pants and maybe a shirt. You'll have to estimate how far that would take you. I wouldn't use it on down personally.

I don't spray my quilts - never saw it as necessary.

Am I missing something? What is the reason to spray your gear? Is this just a precautionary measure to avoid dragging ticks home with you or am I way off.

Looks like my Sawyer brand is already .5 and it does come in a spray bottle. I think I'll start with the hammock & backpack, do some clothes/hat and skip the down. I've never used if before, but if I can avoid using deet, I'll be happy.
