Has anyone added poles to a tarp, that did not come with them?

I am seeing, what looks like tent poles, being used to pull out sides of the tarp. Can they be added to any tarp?

I have a bunch of different shape and sizes of tarps, and am trying to refrain from continuing down the rabbit hole of buying everything I see on here, before I even do my first hang.

It's a pretty simple process. Sew on the panel pulls, make your poles - parts are available. Somewhere on this site there is a thread. Lastly, figure out how you want to attach them. Mine is up now, but being snowed on. Can post some pix later.

the purpose of the various tent pole mods are to open up the inside of the tarp.

it is very easy to add the no sew tent pole mod (just query no sew tent pole mod on this forum) as long as your tarp already has some side pull outs.

I simply made 4 - 8" dogbones (one for each pull out on my superfly) and cut down some fiberglass poles from a small discarded soccer goal. works great.

you can also purchase the poles from a number vendors including Dutchware.com and http://www.questoutfitters.com/tent_poles.htm

Yup! Used Dutch's poles on my superfly. Heavy breeze a few weeks ago, dipped temps to freezing, pole mod worked awesome. Seriously roomy. I usually go porch mode for more room, but with the wind...I was happy to have them!

I did that a few years back with my MacCate Deluxe, which had pullouts, but the pole mod works much better. I sewed in pockets and run the pole under the rainfly, very much like in the pic Shug posted.

Only problem I've had is finding small-diameter poles suitable for a hammock rainfly. Actual tent poles are much too stiff in my experience, especially when I've had to go to ground. Still looking for light-weight, very flexible poles. Will have to look at the links posted earlier in this thread!

I also have an Old Man Winter rainfly with two external poles.

A couple of the site vendors sell a no hassle kit. I went that route. Of of the best things I have added to my kit.

No blackflies or mosquitos. I've been on many cold weather winter trips and have honestly never been cold. You need to know what to expect and bring the right gear to be comfortable.

I agree with biggy, no bugs is nice. Have the right gear and you can mitigate the cold weather.

Also many other reasons I like cold weather camping...MUCH less people, beautiful and crisp out, quiet, I love snow, keeps me camping year round, enjoy testing limits of my gear, etc.

I get that its not for everyone, but I encourage folks to try it. Living in the Seattle area, once I embraced wet weather and subsequently, cold weather camping....I really started to enjoy overcoming the challenges of the conditions and its usually quite fun.
