Allegheny National Forest Group Hang Planning

    Hi Hangers,

I've been reading a lot of comments about doing a group hang in the ANF, and heard a lot about it at MAHHA too. So, I thought I'd try and get the ball rolling. Since I'm new to group camping though, I thought I'd start a little brain storming first.

I guess my first concern is what are the expectations? I'm not much of a hiker, so I'm not looking to get miles into the woods. How about you? Laurie and I talked on the way home from MAHHA and she thinks camping near a trail head with an out house and maybe shelter might be nice, if applicable - depends on where we go and if it's available or even allowed (some areas you have to camp 1500 feet or so away from roads, etc). This also brings up cost, most of the ANF is free and that's where I'm thinking we'll go, no reservations either or permits.

So, should we try and find a trail head to set up near, and people that want can day hike? Or look for a place some miles in and camp?

I can say that Minister Creek is a nice place to hike into and camp, Laurel Mills near Ridgway has a nice pavilion (not sure if it can be reserved) and potty at the trail head or could be hiked to camp spots, Hickory Wilderness has a dispersed camping area at the trail head (never been there tho) or hiked to camp.

There are a lot of camp spots along the trails near the Allegheny Reservoir, but there are some restrictions and maybe fees, I don't know that area very well so someone more familiar would have to step up to plan it.

What do you think, opinions, feedback? Many people seem keen to do something, so lets hear from ya

    Brett

    Hey man!

I don't have any group hang planning experience, and I certainly don't know the area you are considering, but it is only about 4.5 hours from me, so as long as I am not working, consider me in.

    Peace,

    Ed

Minister creek is a good choice for many reasons.First, a good size parking area where I never had a problem finding a spot or any issues with my car.South from the parking lot camping is permitted 300 feet and beyond from the lot,no permit required. It is a forested flood plain along Minister creek for about 1/4 to Tionesta creek with almost unlimited hang spots, and quite beautiful. To the North of the lot there is a 7 spot campground with water pump and outhouse for a reasonable price, self check in at kiosk.Camping is permitted anywhere 300 feet up stream from campground and all along Minister creek trail. The trail is about a seven mile loop with a nice camp area around the creek on the North end that is large and sprawling, this is where it is also connected to North country trail, allowing many hike in opportunities .Also rock ledges and overlook on Minister loop.

Sounds like fun. I can't help with logistics though, I've only been to ASP once and that was last summer on the NY side. Apparently it becomes a "Forest" in PA but is a "Park" in NY. lol I keep on eye on the planning and hopefully I will be able to attend.
Things that I like to do along with hammocking is kayaking, fishing, shooting, eating and napping. Not big on hiking yet do to some limitations.

    For sure!

I think Minister Creek sounds like a great idea with a few different options for us.

Minister Creek is a great place, but popular, I'm not sure how crowded it might get, especially around a holiday weekend. Up by 3 forks (North Country Trail junction) there are plenty of spots so we should be ok.

Thanks for the replies so far, keep 'em coming...

This sounds awesome! Do you have a date in mind? I am a beginner hiker and have never done a group hang but would love to join.

Im thinking July 29/30/31 - I have that weekend off already, I think holidays like July 4th or labor day might be too crowded and group members might have plans for those days already. If the majority would rather do it on a holiday tho I'm game. Lets try and pin down a date in the next couple days.
