Some hammocks, like most of the Clarks, use flexible segmented poles to open up the hammock to give space and, sometimes, to hold up a rain fly.
Recently I was gifted the most glorious pair of $19 Walmart sunglasses, which I then lost b/c I'm me. :-(
The amazing thing about them were the "arms". They were SO flexible and soft, yet they held onto my face perfectly.
These things were "SolarComfort" brand, and after some research I THINK maybe they were made out of "TR90".
That TR90 stuff is still probably too brittle to be "wadded up" into a stuff sack, but it's an example of a cool new material.
I know I've seen old tent flies that short, sewn-in poles (think long soda straws) that held material up at like a window.
Has anyone made a go at using something like this in a hammock? It'd prolly be easier there than a tent since the poles are shorter. For something like that Clark MARK2 it'd be really cool to have poles that could just wad up into a stuff sack instead of the conventional poles that've had some durability problems. Seems like a really difficult problem for the materials folks to crack, but cool new things happen!
