I guess in the grand scheme of things, spending a few extra minutes rigging up a tarp separately doesn't matter. But every time I setup my hammock and knock tiny bits of bark off of trees tying on the tarp and trying to get it centered properly I always wonder if there's a better way. I've got something of a special occasion coming up and an upgrade to my simple hammock & tarp seemed like a nice treat for myself. Passinthru and Drifter have given me some ideas, which is all I was hoping for.

Agree with keeping wet and dry things separate, but I really like getting a tarp over my head before I pull out dry things. Setting up a hammock and quilts is a lot more work than a tarp. I keep the tarp set up simple and quick, and then I can fool with hammocks, quilts, dry clothes, etc.

I'd a thought putting up the tarp THEN putting up your hammock would be that better way!

If it isn't raining, leave it in its snake skins.

I think I have seen video of a Hennessey setup where both hammock WITH attached tarp were stuffed into the same snake skins. Not my preferred way, but sort of meets your criteria.

What others said. Put up tarp first. I keep the tarp in some snake skins on the outside pocket. So I goes up before the pack is opened. On the hammock, I use some dutch TI clips on the tree straps. I have the clips with a few stiches in them to keep them on. Pretty fast way to get the straps on the tree, no threading eyes or anything. Biners work also. Just reach around the tree in the rain and clip. Then, a quick Marlon spike and loop the whoopie/UCR over the spike. At that point, you are under cover.

Hennessy Hammocks have the asym tarp attached to the hammock suspension line. If you don't bother with the snake skins and just stuff it all in the sack (like from factory) then that pretty much fits your bill. Except for the bishop bag. But burn a hole in the bottom of the bag and boom, you've got a bishop bag.

haven't read the replies yet, but "rain setup" caught my eye.

i do a lot of backpack camping in the rain during the raining winter months. i would recommend against the two-in-one approach.

there are many factors. packing it effectively is tricky. WIND is another factor. you won't be able to actually shield the hammock with the tarp during deployment, particularly if it is windy.

when raining, figure on pitching your tarp at least twice. the first time might be a quick cover to work underneath for the hammock and general setup. after that, i usually repitch the tarp depending on the needs.

    cheers,

    sv-

I'm with both Silvrsurfr and Shug on this one. It's not cool getting into a hammock that's already wet because you didn't set up the tarp first. As for not storing them together, it never fails that *sometime* I'll forget to dry out something wet and if you get that musty smell in a hammock you'll *never* get it out.
