    First Night of a Hang

I've noticed that when I'm on a multi day outing, my sleep during that first night in the hammock is always more fitful / worse than the rest of the nights. Anybody else experience this? I always thought it was because I needed to get re-acclimated to hammock sleeping since I only sleep in a hammock on camping trips.

I just read an article suggesting that many people sleep poorly (in any environment) on the first night, because of the body's natural protective response to a new environment. Link to story here.

I'm fairly new to hanging and wish I would have known this from the start. My lack of sleep isn't necessarily because of figuring out the hammocking thing, rather it is a natural response to sleeping in a new place. For anyone who is trying a hammock for the first time -- don't get discouraged if you don't sleep well (especially if you are on a one night trip).

Fulltimer and I experience the same thing on my first night in the woods. May be the substituting the sirens and loud vehicles for the crickets and the frogs.
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

On our first and only (so far) night out my wife and I slept great. We both woke up around threeish, made some insulation adjustments and watered some plants outside the campsite, and had no problems getting back to sleep. It was great!

LOL! Also helps to not read stuff like this (https://hammockforums.net/forum/show...nder-Your-Tarp) before your first hang.

Sleeping pills exist for a very good reason. I actually like valerian root capsules...work quite well.
