Yes. Sewing to add width will also give you a very stiff seam that doesn't follow the lay of the rest of hammock.

A longer hammock will give you more length from your head to the gathered end. This means it will make the fabric wider at the shoulder area than a shorter hammock. You don't necessarily need a wider hammock than 60" to start. Make an 11x5 to see if this works for you.

At worst case, you'll have a few hammocks for friends

    Good luck in your journey.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Yes the hammock ended up at 8'8". I'm 6'1" 250 pounds. I will be making an 11'x5' hammock probably this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. I'll try the head end spreader bar after if the longer one doesn't work. Thanks for the help.

Ok I made a 12'x5'. I can't get rid of the uncomfortable squeeze on my shoulders. It is actually more pressing up and in on my elbow, which is in turn causing shoulder pain. I have been searching options, but have yet to find a solution. I would like to add that I am typically a stomach sleeper. Will a bridge hammock solve my problems? One I saw that looked promising, until I saw the weight is the maverick. Another I saw that I like, but am unsure of is the diy that hikingdad did. Really looks promising. Any thoughts?

This is a bit different than what I was envisioning.

The Longer hammock should allow you to get farther away from the gathered end. Are both shoulders equally sensitive? Try switching your left/right orientation

Both shoulders are equally sensitive. I've tried swapping positions side to side, swapping ends, tried both sides there, tried more sag, less sag, lowered and raised the head end, etc. I'm trying to think of other options, but searching on here and Google has netted zero answers that I haven't already tried. At a little over 12' long, I can't see the size being a factor, unless I go wider, though it feels like I will have the same problem with a gathered end regardless of size. Though going longer did eliminate the squeeze on my right shoulder, I can't sleep at all with the pain in my left shoulder. I'll think and research some more on this later. Game of Thrones is on. I did score some trekking poles today on sale for $20. Might try abridge tomorrow with some leftover material. I'll have to scrounge up some 1/2" webbing first.

So do you get shoulder squeeze when lying on your back or on your stomach?

are you using a rl? if so how about an arl? for me, I use an adjustable. I find that the feel is more important then 83%. I usually make 90 to 76% and get something in that. Fabric, width and length all play a role in rl. Meaning all 11' hammocks dont, use 83% or 10.5 use 90 and such. For me it varies.

I sleep on my stomach in a bed. Thus far I've only been able to sleep on my back in a hammock.
