    Hangin' in Portland, Oregon

    Hey everyone!

As the title says, I'm hammocking in Portland and the surrounding areas. Very new to it and have the barest of bones gear-wise...this weekend was my first hang to even see if it was something I would want to stick with doing before investing in gear. I bought a second hand Kammock hammock, patched up a couple holes, bought some daisy chained tree straps and headed to a car camping site to try it all out. My boyfriend is still tent camping so that left me with a bail out option this weekend, though it remains to be seen how long I'll have that as an option as he seems keen to try hanging now. The weather gods were kind to us and I didn't need a bug net or a tarp (neither of which I have ) and the temp got down to maybe 40. I used a super heavy mummy sleeping bag, my Thermarest CCF pad, a microfiber mummy liner, and a Nalgene filled with hot water to preheat my bag. I definitely got a little CBS but nothing that I couldn't deal with.

I'm interested in local group hangs, making some of my own gear, and finding good quality options for whatever I cannot or will not try to make. As of right now, I'll likely only be car camping to try out gear and my setup so if something fails, it's not a huge deal.

    So um, yeah...hi!

Welcome from GA! I would think you'd want a tarp pretty soon, being in the PNW I understand y'all tend to get a little rainfall round those parts.

You have the right spirit though, make do with what you have, keep an open mind and be willing to DIY when possible, and acquire what you need when it becomes necessary. Happy hanging!

Shug's crazy videos (before I found this forum) was what pushed me over the edge to just give hanging a try. He seemed to be having a good time so how could I go wrong?

Heck yeah I need a tarp here and I just scored a free tarp today! It's one of those blue heavy duty ones but again, it'll do until I can upgrade.

    Welcome!
I miss Oregon, used to live in Rock Creek. Wish I was into hanging back then because the "no mosquito" thing would have made hanging topless so awesome. Here in the northeast we have all those nasty flying buggers to keep out. There are so many great camping places out your way, I'm jealous. Happy Hanging!

Welcome to the group. As mentioned you will need a rain fly soon. Never know when you might get "misted". If you hang in the Bend area, most nights are dry with little or no mist in the early AM. Remember to put the wind and cold blockers under you, that is where the cold really comes to you. A toasty side toward the ground, keeps the rest of your body cozy.
