I'll either make bigger stakes from sticks or tie off to a heavy rock, log, or adjacent tree.

This is what I do all the time. I haven't carried stakes in years. If there isn't something to tie off to (usually there is), I push a stick into the ground as far as it will go. Note: Tie of locations are not as common in tent sites which are cleared of all saplings, brush, rocks and logs. One of the benefits of a hammock is having more options on where to hang.

I've dug a small trench tied a rope around a large stick and buried it. Ive only done it in snow or sand though. It's not exactly leave no trace, but could probably be done with minimal impact in a pinch. I've also used boat and canoe anchors when I've had them.

I haven't tried this yet but am curious--How about using those spiral stainless twist-in stakes usually used for dogs' leashes? Maybe several could be used to guy up a hammock w/out trees. Hmmmm...

If i have stakes and I am worried about pull out i will double it up by placing a rock on top of the stake or tie directly to the rock. I have also buried large sticks and compacted the dirt as much as possible as well. So far i have been able to stay dry with no flapping tarps!
