Snake skins size ratios?

I am struggling with this. I will add that I have made them before but never took note of the size. This time I have cut them twice and somehow made the same mistake both times. Now I just want to be sure because I am running out of material.

So the tarp its for is a big tarp I made for a fellow scouter. Its made like the diygear plans. So 12' rl but 14+ at the bottom. So I am makimg it 6' plus a few inches long for seam and overlap. But how wide should it be. I have made 10" wide to cut it 4" to 6" . The first time I just felt like I didnt allow enough for seams. And it just felt to small. So this time I started thinking 4x2 was 8 so lets make it 10 but the stupid part was then just cutting another 10" wide piece not thinking that if it was balanced it should have been 10 on one side and 14 on the other or 12 across and 5x7.

So now I stopped to make sure the 5" down to 7" across say 74 inches should be good right.

So made them 5 x 7 and will see if they work. I am giving them to the owner tonight and see if he likes them.

I'm currently working on a tarp and will have some left over material. did you use a pattern or just create a tapered tube for it?

I recently cut out the 2 panel shapes and have a lot of the membrane silpoly left over. I saw this thread and thought it would be an excellent use of the extra material.
