    Waterproofing question

I have a ULA catalyst and am going into the BWCA this summer. I hear lots of folks using a "compactor bag" to line the inside of their packs to waterproof them... what size bag would you use for the catalyst if the main body is 2600 Liters? I tried to Google this but you only get volume and not measurements...

    Thanks for any help!

I don't have the Catalyst but I have the Ohm. I would think that the standard trash compactor bag would work for you. I got my bags from Home Depot. When I put the bag in my Ohm, it sticks out the top. You don't need to put everything in the compactor bag, only the stuff that needs to be kept dry (quilts, hammock, clothes). I just squash the bag down to get the air out after everything is in and then twist the top of the bag. The rest of my stuff just goes in on top of that.

18 gal is what most people use. Just fold over what you don't need. If it's way tall, cut off the excess leaving enough to fold over a time or two.

It's a good idea to go well over the actual volume you need...you can always compress it. I like to roll it a few times, then push down to let the air out, or even kneel on it if you really want to save space. Then roll more or twist it closed. I have a 40L dry sack even though I only use about half that.

The standard trash compactor bag should work fine. I bought some for me and my son and I gave the boys in our scout troop some and they all have different packs. The standard size seemed to work with everyone's pack and some of the leaders have pretty big packs.

Appreciate the info. Im expecting to flip the canoe once or twice while there because we are "ca-nOObs" and am hoping to keep the important stuff dry. Also, if there is enough airspace in the backpack, I can use it as a float to help get back into the canoe...
