    Knotty mod question

I checked the knotty mod thread, but couldn't find and answer to these two questions...

    1) How do I "burn" the Knotty mod hole if I don't have access to a soldering tool? I was planning on making tiny cuts with some scissors, and then singing the holes with a lighter.

    2) How far up from the foot end do I make the holes? This is the part that is throwing me off the most. I searched the thread but was unable to find an indication.

Thanks in advance for all helpful replies. I appreciate it.

You can heat up a nail to melt it. You put the Knotty where your feet lay. We make ours 2 feet long. One easy way to get close is measure you, divide by 2 and this is the distance from center to put the center of the knotty.

Ahhhhhh. That is a good way to measure where the knotty should go. Good thinking, Dutch. Thanks for the tip.

Heating up a nail, eh? Any tips for not burning my fingers with this method? It seems to me that the nail would get REALLY hot.

    I think Dutch "nailed" it....
I've done a handful now using a heated nail and found that I actually prefer that method. My soldering tools aren't temperature adjustable, so I've over done it more times than I care to admit. Plus, with a nail you have a lot greater flexibility in the size of hole you'll create.

Good to know. Do you have any tips for only burning one side of the hem? The only thing I can think of is to go slow, and be extremely careful pinching the fabric while carefully using the hot nail.

With the ones I have done. I always marked and made the hole before folding and stitching the hem. Place your mark closer to the edge so that when you fold your hem it will be on the inside of the hammock when you stitch your hem.

    My hem came already stitched.

Though this will come in handy when I make a new hammock out of some fabric I ordered.

That's pretty much it. If you're able to, try and push the layers together at their tops so they create a gap or empty space between the two layers. It's a little more difficult to do this the smaller the hem is.
Give it a shot on some practice fabric first so you can get a little better feel for how hot the nail needs to be and basically familiarize yourself with it.

"No Burn Method" - When sewing the initial side hems for the hammock, sew down about a foot from the what will be the foot end of the hammock. Stop and lock the stitch. Leave a 1/2" gap and start a new hem and finish the side. Later, slide a piece of shock cord in the 1/2" gap you left and keep feeding it toward the middle of the side until long enough for the foot box area - I like about 30". Sew the buried end of the shock cord securely in place. Tension the shock cord to take the slack out of the side of the hammock then tie a knot in the shock cord. If you used thin cord, you may need a cord lock instead of a knot. Test and readjust as needed. I usually trim the excess shock cord once I am happy with it. Leave a few inches if you think you might want to change it some day.

Flat elastic can be used instead of shock cord. Sometimes a little harder to feed into the side of the hammock but much easier to sew the buried end.
