Well, if that's all that's stopping you, pick up an inexpensive tarp from REI or WalMart and bring an extra sleeping bag. I've been experimenting with a pull-up bag (a Kelty Galactic 35°F) with great success.
Hey guys, Jacob & I can probably make the January 15-17 dates. We like the idea of a mid-state location. We can take the cold if it is reasonably dry. But, we are not geared up for snow trekking or edgy/super wet/freezing cold conditions.
Okay, my wife and I will be hanging both weekends (doing the azt in March). But lets say we pin down the group hang to the 15-17 of January.
Just put it in my calendar.
I feel your pain. It has taken me a long time to gather the four items I have (hammock, UQ, Tarp, Sleeping bag). No wonder I've never had nice gear...it's expensive Just keep tucking your spare change away and sooner or later you can place an order.
Yeah, gear can definitely be expensive, but you can also improvise for pretty cheap. My wife and I went out about three weeks ago and hung in ~30dF and I used an extra sleeping bag and a $5 blue ccf pad tied underneath and my normal bag on top. Wasn't pretty but it worked. Also sewed together two lengths of regular ripstop nylon from the walmart to use as a tarp, wasn't waterproof but it directed the precipitation away from me and I stayed dry underneath through the mix of hail/rain/snow. I have extra sleeping bags, if you'd like to use it for an improvised uq. Just let me know.
Thanks for the offer! I have 4 different sleeping bags, so I am sure I could make something work with any combination of those bags. Tarps is in the works thanks to making deposits this week at the sperm bank as well as the plasma bank so I am pretty sure I am in for the Az hang.
I think the Fossil Creek area would be good, centrally located for everyone. Just curious, would anyone be interested in doing a longer hike in/out? Maybe 10 in & 10 out?
