    Sock as an UQP

I like having gear that can pull double duty and with that said, I'm wondering if my soon to be arriving socks could work as an UQP in warmer weather. I don't know if a sock would be big enough, but could you hang it under your hammock/underquilt, and just run shock cord down both sides(inside) of the sock and attach them to the suspension; adjusting so it doesn't compress the underquilt ?

    Anyone ever try this ?

    Thanks, J

Puzzled why you don't know if a sock will be big enough as a sock encloses the whole hammock. I imagine you could use it as a UQP, but I'd think it would be too loose. I use a UQP partly because it allows me to be a little sloppy in adjusting the UQ - difficult to do when it is only me. The fit of the UQP assists the UQ in preventing convection heat loss. A sock as a UQP might be too loose.

The sock will be twice the weight of an UQP. Also a PIA to rig properly.

    I don't have them yet...............that is why I don't know !
Just wondering if anyone has tried it. When they come in, I will do some testing to see.

    Thanks, J

It could be done, and I have actually been thinking of designing an UQP with optional top cover - which would basically be a sock. But all commercial socks I have used would need additional rigging to transform them into an UQP. For short trips it's definitely better to use either a sock or an UQP to save weight. It's only on long trips without the possibility to switch out gear that a solution like this makes sense.

Yup, I knew it would need extra rigging, and might no exactly make a lot of sense, but if it works well enough, it's another option that I have. I will post up a couple pics once I try it.

    Thanks, J.

I was thinking the same thing - but my idea was to have the UQ "wear" the sock, just tucking the extra sock fabric between the hammock and UQ. Then the UQ suspension does its thing for both sock and UQ, and the bottom of the UQ is covered.
