Quilt too wide maybe my issue?

I have a 20 degree 58" wide EE quilt I had for ground use.

In my first hang I felt like it was too hot for mid 40's temps.

BUT that may have been because it was too wide to vent easily and stayed on me in the hammock.

Anyone have issues with a wide quilt and had to purchase a more narrow one for use in hammock?

It's suppose to wrap around you so it tucks under your shoulders when you need it for warmth, to ensure that there's no gaps between it and your UQ.

Mine is actually wide enough that it arches up, like a downy roof, over my torso, I worried it might be colder because it's not close to my skin, but I was plenty warm, and less claustrophobic. I probably could have ordered it the next width smaller and saved on some weight and bulk, but I kind of guessed at what might be wide enough, erring to slightly larger than what I measured might be OK. I have no issues venting it though, and it's a 0°F Quilt set, 5oz overstuffed, and I slept with it in overnight temps in the mid 50's though I'm also a cold sleeper.

I don't think too wide a quilt would make you too warm, or at least not be the biggest cause.

40 might be a bit warm for a 20 quilt, but if you were too warm that could also have to do with your under insulation.

I used a three season under quilt and 30 degree top quilt and that worked for me the whole AT.

Never heard of a quilt too wide to vent.

Didn't think about the underquilt needing more venting.

Yeah, a wider TQ can make it a little more hassle to vent (but that's when opening the footbox comes in handy), but venting with the UQ is also a really effective way to handle that.
