    New Blanket

I just ordered and received 3 yards of 3.6 climashield insulation to make a blanket for my scouting son.
Im shocked on how big the folded bundle of insulation is. I did some test of squeezing and so forth but will this compress small? or is it going to take a lot of room up?
I thought it would compress a lot.

It will compress, but you should NOT compress synthetic insulation for more than the amount of time it's in the pack, and don't compress it tightly. He will suffer cold nights from degradation of the insulation over time.

It will definitely take up more room than down, but can be compressed to a degree. You don't want a hard, melon-like bundle when compressed.

I was thinking this would be just an extra warmth blanket, to throw over a sleeping bag or so forth. I guess we will see when I make it.

I might have to rethink the size of it, if its going to be that big.

I guess it depends on what you mean by small.

My climashield blanket compresses to half the size of my old sleeping bag (also synthetic). But it still is relatively bulky. It fits into a 7x7x13 in stuff sack, and is constructed of 1 layer of 2.5oz, and 1 layer of 3.6oz, if that helps you visualize it any.

3 yards of climashield insulation is a fair amount of insulation for a blanket. Usually it comes 60" wide. You probably could make the blanket 42-48" wide by 72" long and just use 2 yards of the material. If you are going for a multi-layer blanket then you will have to deal with resulting bulk. That is the one tradeoff you make using synthetic insulation.

    Cheers

yea I just bought what the info graph said to buy on DIY Gear.
I'm sure we can cut the size down a lot. that would be a big blanket.

Danny how tall is your son? You could make it 58-60 inches long and 40ish wide and still have quite a bit of material left. I have a large 3.6 and it compresses fair enough. Just treat it like down as far as storing it is concerned.
