Ultralight Hammock with Integrated Bug Netting

    Hi All,

It has been a few years since I've made a hammock, but am considering making one after learning about the Robic XL 1.0 material and no-see-um at .5oz yd/sq. Things are getting lighter

At any rate, I am doing some math to see if how light I can make a new 12' hammock (I am 6'5") with integrated bug net for the next few seasons of thru-hiking.

    I currently have:
    - DIY WB clone that weighs in at 20oz with suspension
    - basic hammock with a bug sock (tulle) that weighs in at 14 oz with suspension

Part of me is just interested in making another hammock, but if it will only be a couple ounces lighter than the WB close, I may not bother.

By my calculations, using the Robic XL 1.0, .5oz noseeum, #3zipper, 6' Whoopies, and 8' webbing -> a 12' hammock should come in less than 20oz

Has anyone built a similar hammock with similar materials (particularly the Robic and .5oz noseeum? What was the weight? I aim to have a footbox, and structural ridgeline in the hammock as well.

    Thanks,

    Beardoh! aka Chop

See this thread as an example: https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...Darien-hammock

Papa Smurf made a 10' Darien for a little over 9 oz using 1.0 Robic XL and NS50 noseeum. It's not the same as the WBBB obviously, but it gives a gauge for what's possible.

I'm not sure what you're planning on doing with the zippers (full zip half zip etc) but for a 12 footer you could come in around 11-12 oz with CLs and Ridgeline. You'll be plenty under 20oz for sure

I just built a hammock with very similar materials and design to the Darien and it came to 10.0oz in a double ended stuff sack. Was an 11' hammock in Hexon 1.0, NS50 (version 1) bug netting, #3 zipper on one side only, 1.75mm dyneema fixed length ridgeline @ 83%, and 7/64 amsteel cl's on each end.

I am away from home and don't have my weight sheet, but if I recall correctly the rest of my suspension came in at sub 4oz. That consists of 5' kevlar 3.3 tree straps, 6' 7/64" amsteel whoopies with whoopie hooks.

I love this hammock so far and it is very comfortable for me at 5'9" 190#. Good luck with your build!
