The 83% rule...should it be broken?

I have a 11 foot gathered-end hammock and have always adjusted my ridgelines several inches on either side of 109-110" (the hammock length x 83%),mostly to reduce any calf pressure. I have never eliminated it until tonight. I made some changes to my suspension (rap rings and straps replacing the whoopie slings) and hung the hammock WITHOUT a ridgeline by mistake. I hopped in to test the comfort once again and it was wonderful...no calf pressure whatsoever.

Revelling in my finally finding the perfect ridgeline length, I hopped out to measure it for the record. I was at first shocked that there was no ridgeline and second...after some careful measuring found my "ridgeline-less" length and it was 125" for my 11 footer. I am wondering how this could be. This is nowhere near 83% and wish I had thought out of the box long ago.

This is a Simply Light designs tree runner hammock, a single layer 11 footer with 6" continuous loops run through the sewn channel on each end. Nothing fancy whatsoever.

Have other hangers found they like a much longer ridgeline than what is supposed to be "correct"?

I'll go first. I have three hammocks, two 11' and one 10'6". The rl length is different in each, two well above 83% but different from each other. And one about 79%.

In short, Im super happy you found your length. Hang Your Own Hang and enjoy it.

It's more of a guideline than a rule.

If it feels good, do it.
    HYOH and all that.

I install Dutch Ridgeline Biners on all my ridgelines exactly so I can detach them and hang loose. Originally I did it so I could sit in my hammock and not hit my head on the ridgeline. Once I went to 11'-11'6" hammocks, hitting the ridgeline while seated really wasn't an issue but it was nice to stretch out once in a while.

My ideal setup, an adjustable ridgeline with maybe 12" of adjustment, a Dutch Ridgeline Biner and gear loops at both ends. For me that's cherry and I run it on my custom setups and retrofit to my cottage vendor built hammocks.

    People need a number.
83% is just a place to comfortably start. None of mine are 83% either but I have never done the math to see what they are. I do all I can to avoid math in any form.
Kinda like the 70º thing for needing some sort of insulation under you in a hammock. Results will vary but gives us something to answer when asked.
I give folks wrong directions too when they ask me how to get somewhere. Just feel bad saying I don't know.

Have you actually measured the length of your hammock, the distance from and to where you attach your SRL? Don't just trust your manufacturers dimensions, you can be surprised!

+1. I'll even take it a step farther and say it's not a rule at all, it's a suggested starting point.

The ridgline length will be different with you out of the hammock. I believe it would be longer if I am thinking about this the right way. Maybe you somehow measured while in the hammock. Have you put the longer length ridgline on yet?

Personally, I like my RL longer than 83%. But by a small margin
