    what thread do I use?

I started a hammock project and got some outdoor canvas thread, I heard you don't want cotton or any natural thread. It doesn't have a weight on it but my mom says 12 (I say 10) and it doesn't work it gets stuck, cut, jammed, and just about anything thing else that can go wrong has. I've used the machine with other fabric and thread and it works great. So long story short what thread and thread weight should I use. I have a pfaff 360 and a viking mega quilter. I'm sewing 1.9 ripstop nylon and 1.9 ripstop nylon with a water resestent and sun block coating (for the tarp). Also should I use a straight or zigzag. Any other info related to thread and stiching would be appreciated.

I just use the 100% polyester thread from wallyworld. haven't had an issue with it yet but the gutermanns is a much higher quality. the only stich that ive used for just about everything is just a regular straight stitch. the zigzag comes in handy for bar tacks but that's about it. I use a Japanese singer clone from the 60's and all it does is straight lines and I haven't had any issues.
