I'm in the Southeast and went with 8' deciding it's easier to trim that back than add a couple feet. For the most part, I think I'm going to be able to get away with 5'.

I was using the same setup as SilvrSurfr.. except I was using MSH or Sheet bend to connect straps to the fixed loop in the whoopie. Worked fine and I have yet to have the MSH slip. To the OP's question, the MSH would be as close the tree as reasonable, and the adjustments were made with the whoopie.

I've since switched to 6' kevlar straps and loop aliens (stainless knock-offs for now.. Ti's originals are in the mail). The LA's are on the hammock CL and instead of whoopies, I am now using a simple 5' amsteel leader with fixed eye on one end only (going to change that to a dog bone at some point) to loop over the MSH or tie to the kevlar using a sheet bend.. What I am finding is a bit less bulk and more versatility having ditched my old straps and whoopies. In a short hang, I can go kevlar to loop alien and omit the amsteel and MSH/sheet bend. The jury is out on this, since the Ti LA's are smaller than the stainless knock offs and I am not sure if the kevlar will thread through the smaller holes in the LA.. We'll see. For a long hang, or large trees, I add the leader between strap and LA, and carry extra dog bones if I need even more reach, but that hasn't happened yet. NE trees are plentiful and are generally 12-18 inches.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

It is honestly nice to have for some people I think with the Dutch buckle you could use continuous loops though like the spiders Dutch correct me if I am wrong
