    Hello from France!

    hello fellow hangers,

I'm not really new in the hammock world, but gone through a rather long (sometimes painful) trial and error way... even almost gave up this autumn on a last desesperate attempt to add it to my ''flexible-4-season gear pack'' where I got butt frozen and soaked again...

    hammock sucks:

    - you can hang anywhere... but spend the evening on sloppy rocks or brambles!!
    - you can hang anywhere... where 2 hanging point are perfectly spaced and orientated
    - you can hang anywhere... but have to carry tons of extra gear and ropes to get 1/2 of the protection you'd get on the ground...

i'm a very enthousiast and fullfilled ground-tarp camper... why the heck should I bother ?
i'll keep it for garden naps and a few summer nights, that's it!

let's go back to the good-old-bombedproofed way!!

    or my favorite all times:

    ...

    ... but...

I still felt sad about this partial failure, I hate blaming a piece of gear, when I know Inside that roots cause is almost always the way you use it!!

started to think about pro and contras, I wanted winter insulation, but no extra gear

    >flat inflatable mat+bivy bag+survival cover as ''underquilt''

i struggled every time with the tarp set up and got poor protection / Wind-kite effect

    >started to train at each bivouac A-frames and flying diamond... actually start to enjoy it quite a lot

I then started to seek for places where it was not possible to ground camp...

    and well...

    slowly but surely...

until last saturday... where i kind of marked a new step in my outdoor life:

such a marvelous night and waking up!!!!!

i'm now officially in love with the system... and have so much to learn!!!

    see you there then^^

    Ben

Welcome, Sesska! There is definitely a learning curve with hammock camping, but it's worth, in my mind. I know you'll find most folks here more than willing to share info and experiences! USe teh search function and check out the articles and "stickies". I learned a lot just doing that.

Howdy, and welcome from Texas. Sounds like a familiar story. Think a lot of us where in that same boat. I got off the ground for medical reasons. Glad to see you didn't quit and tried again..

    A Frenchman surrendering?
    hin...hin...

1/2 french and 1/2 swiss... i do not know yet though which one is worth (worse)

Sesska! There is definitely a learning curve with hammock camping
yep, i did not realise this at beginning.

when i went camping this week end a few friends on Monday said ''hard-core!!''

i just thought... what hardcore ? one of the best sleeping night for ages (I got an average 15s falling asleep window in a hamac... +7h no waking up time behind... it's just amazing oO ), waking up with light snow flakes on the tarp, birds singing in the forest, water fall sound down in the valley... all dry and warm inside... what hardcore?

but i've actually improved a lot this year, definitely.

but it's worth, in my mind
i've ''seen the light'' this week end, that's why i'm here

I got off the ground for medical reasons
i've also some shoulder pb due to a lot of fighting sports/climbing/canoe/stupid work at home...

on the ground (or at home) I wake up 3-4 times a night
    last time none
time before once, because undermat slept a bit...

Glad to see you didn't quit
    it's just because I can't, I won't and I don't stop...

    Love the pictures!
thanks, got a lot more here, but it's all written in french...

    http://loiseauivre.unblog.fr/

... but if you want to have an idea of the area

very beautiful piece of middle mountains with a LOT of free space
it's 50-100km away north from the bests kayak/climbing spots of western Europe (Ardèche, Verdon)... but too humble to be considered... so...

no mass tourism... no drastic laws about camping, dogs, fire, paddling periods, and so on...

    34 people / km2...

    woods...
    hills...
    gorges...
    snow...

    heaven...

thanks for the very friendly welcoming by the way!

    bye

    Ben
