HELP: Newbie needs winter Hammock tips (Australia)

    Hey all,

So I am wanting to go hammocking in the winter here in Brisbane, Australia, and I know, it doesn't get as cold here as it does in America, but it is still freezing in the winter, on the beach, away from the city (mornings can get to -3 C or 26.6 F). I am interested in getting a winter hammock, I have seen some pictures etc around and they look pretty cool, I don't want to spend a lot of money but a reasonable amount. I also want to buy one for a friend for their birthday which is at the start of April. So if you can link me to sites or stores that would be appreciated.

Any other tips would be appreciated.

    Jacques

It is not so much the hammock but the insulation you choose to use.
    Many options......https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...h6OeCVQY1WGnXG

I think you best will be served with the usual (but longer and wider hammock), a tarp with the doors (maybe permanent, attachable or just a bigger tarp) and what we call 3-season insulation (top and under quilt or your existing sleeping bag + slightly wider pad). Google for "Ultimate hang" and browse Shug's YouTube videos.

So basically a 20˚F set-up should work for you. But are you car camping or backpacking? Is weight a factor for you?

Hey mate, not sure if you knew about tier gear? Well, Simon at tier gear is in Tassie and has a few great hammocks to choose from, as well as under quilts, top quilts all things to set you up for winter, he also has stax of other gear, worth a look in.
Some fella just recently did a review on the Goshawk hammock, this is Simons integrated bug net hammock, it is in this forum under reviews, for what's it worth check it out.
    All the best mate.

Jacques, not sure if you are subscribed or still around, but I'm also in brizvegas and looking to do the same thing. I'm also looking hard at Simon's gear myself. If you want to DIY he is also your man.
Either way, let me know how you go. I'm lone wolf atm and don't know any other Brissy hangers

As mentioned, for cold weather, add insulation to your current hammock gear, but you will not need a mosquito net if it is cold at night. You can layer more insulation in whatever underquilt you already have. Be careful to not mash the insulation as it will then not insulate as well. I have separate top and under quilts for summer, and for spring/fall, then use them both together in the winter. Consider using some adjustable elastic cord from one side of the underquilt, then over the hammock ridgeline to the other side of the underquilt to snug up your winter insulation. My under quilts have tie loops at the corners and the midpoint of the sides, so they are easy to layer as one thick UQ. With both of them from the same UQ maker, they are the same dimensions, just different thicknesses.

Get a tarp that is long enough to fold the ends in, to make doors, or make add-on doors for your tarp. Look at the 2QZQ website in Tarp Accessories to buy separate tarp doors (lightweight, easy to mail internationally) or just to get ideas on how to make add-on doors. Tier in AU might make some for you during this cold, slow business season.

Practice for several nights with your winter gear before you pack and walk kilometers away from your car.

You can start with just adding a foam pad in the hammock plus your summer under quilt but I think that will not work well if it is very cold.

    Hey Jacques

I've just got myself kitted out in the last few months and did my first hang at Dargo in -3C a couple of weekends ago. My advice is to do your research by watching as many videos as possible and read and ask questions here at Hammock forums. I have also sent you a PM of where you can get gear from a very good local(Aussie) hammock maker.

I have just ordered a under-quilt from him.

    Cheers

    Ben

Simon in tassie makes his own, tiergear...
    Adventurefriends in Cairns stock amok's...
    Hammockbliss have a Ozzy site...
WildEarth on the Gold Coast have hammocks....
I'm sure there's more ways to score a hammock,, eBay, Gumtree
    Bushwalk.com has a sell/wanted section etc etc

You will need insulation of some sort & netting to keep the bugs at bay,
mainly for whining mozzies and those tiny biting sandflies for coastal hangs.

Hope that helps in some way...welcome to the trees. 😎
